Help with oill filter removal!!!

Similar approach to Larryboy here, but a reuseable part.
After you have exhausted the other suggestions like dilling 3 screws thru your filter wrench.....after all else fails, I would used a die grinder and cut the end cap of the filter off and gut out the filter element until you can see up inside the filter.
You should then see the other side of the filter mounting plate. It will have the threaded center post that the filter spins onto and then the outer cirlce of smaller holes. Measure the distance accross the holes...lets say they are 1.5" accross center to center. I would get a 1.5" nut at the hardware store then 2 bolts maybe 3/4" long by 1/4" thread and weld them on the nut. You can grind down the threads of the bolt until they fit in 2 of the holes in the plate.

I would then put a socket on the 1.5" nut and an extension on a 1/2" ratchet and turn it out....If you make the 1/4" bolts too long they may break if it is that tight so keeping them as short as possible would be good.

That's EXACTLY what I did.....and that's EXACTLY the filter wrench that broke!

Bent and snapped one of the fingers off like an old twig!

That wont fit a 1200 GS!...hell you can barely get anything between the filter skin and the surrounding heat sink fins.
Also, If i cant twist it with a 2 foot long, 1/2 inch ratchet, then I doubt these would help anyhow! (which is how I broke the filter wrench!)

Thanks for the input..but if it takes that kind of time and money to remove a filter...I'll take it to my dealer first!!!..let them deal with it (UNDER WARRANTY!)

I wonder if the extreme heat the bike saw this summer had anything to do with the "welding" the gaske to the engine case. ?

You mean spray around the filter seal? I think its sealed enough that the soak woulndt penetrate...besides, its been soaked with motor oil on the opposite side for 5 months now!

I can't figure it out, but some bikes just do this filter-sucking thing.

On the last bike I owned I, and every owner on its own sub-forum, found that by 3,000 miles the filters we had been carefull to not overtighten became stuck on the bikes. These were fully exposed filters we could grab with an entire hand (or gloved hand, or what-ever to get extra grip on the filters), yet filters we could test-remove with one hand when newly installed were nearly impossible to remove when used.

Is it some type of vacuum-lock? Hard to believe since the crankcase is open the minute we drain the oil out or take off the filelr cap.

Are modern filter gaskets either swelling too much (don't look like it) or glueing the filter to the case?

Can you give more detail as to what you mean by "the filter mounting flange"??
I assume you mean to remove the filter skin and start beating on the main frame part with the holes and threads???

Leave the filter alone, the flange/lip of the filter closest to the engine, a little different color in that picture...chisel on that, trying to twist the filter once it crumples is wasted energy. If you just barely move it, it will come out.
