Well i finally yanked this sucker off. You can see the method that finally worked. I took someones advice from this thread and kept applying a constant force without trying to really crank on it....after about 10 seconds it started to give but still gave quite a bit of resistance for at least 180 degrees of loosening!
Here is the filter after removal with wrench still screwed on. ![]() here is the filter after removing the wrench. Thanks for everyone's input on this!!!

Thanks for posting, the whole thread was informative; some good things to know and try if this happens to us.

I have just been inspired with the 4,344 views and 93 posts to include this in the "100 Threads".

Great job! In the future, K&N makes filters for us with a socket welded on. Amazon actually sells them for $10. I've been using them since my 6000mi service.

The filter nuts break off or distort due to the filter body being made from biscuit tin metal. .

I have little to say
|
K&Ns are not the answer to much of anything.
Their air filters are a mess to clean and pass dirt and their oil filters with what appears to be a convenient nut are sub-standard quality. Mobil or Purolators are the benchmark for oil filters if you're not using OE. |

@ qman8: What kind of shape was the gasket in? Was it stuck to the motor, or did it come off with the filter?
K&N has a nice little nut on the filter, but the key word is "little." How much torque can you apply to the little nut vs. using a cup-style socket that attaches to the whole filter? As Steptoe mentioned, the little nut can twist off. I myself would prefer the ability to apply more torque. I've used the cup-style socket method for over 35 years on all kinds of vehicles, and never had a problem getting a filter off with it.
