Hard Drive Help

Hi there,

I have a Win7 desktop in which the HDD crapped the bed. I never made a recovery disk for it and I'm kicking myself for that now.

In a roundabout way I was able to get the remaining files off the desktop: by copying my Win7 laptop HDD to a new Hybrid HDD(which went into the lappy) and booting off of the old laptop HDD. I used the original desktop HDD as a secondary drive and transferred the data on the bad HDD to an external drive.

I can explore all the info on the old drive when it is the secondary drive, but the desktop still won't boot up trying to use it as the boot drive. It goes into windows startup repair, and that just cycles.

My questoin is:
Do I need to buy a new Win7 disk and use my old product key to get this thing going again with my old lappy drive, or is there a generic Win7 disc out there on the web somewhere that I can use my product key with?

I checked this thread out:
http://advrider.com/forums/showthrea...+drive+windows

and saw the boot disk link, but there wasn't a Win7 option. There was an article mentioning booting from an upgrade disk that was enticing, but the gist I got was that it only worked sometimes.

Ideas?

As far as I know, you can use any Windows 7 disc to install and use your old product key to activate as long as it's for the same version you installed (ie Home Premium 64bit, Ultimate 32bit, etc.) If you don't have the install disc that came with the computer, how you get an install disc is up to you. There are more or less scrupulous ways; Google it.

I found this joint with an ISO file.

I think this might be the way to go?

That should work fine once you burn it to a DVD.
