I'm thinking of coming Saturday morning. What time will folks be heading out on a ride?

IN for Friday, buddy coming with his new KLR. I'm riding the Wee. What time might other big bike riders be heading out?

MadChap, I'll be there tomorrow evening, and up for some exploring to the south east on Friday if anyone's interested. I've zero local knowledge, but usually manage to stay reasonable "found" with a decent map . . . well, sometimes . . .

Looks like I will be able to show up Saturday night with the wife for some bullshitting, and be able to do some riding on Sunday with the small bike if I can get the headlight fixed.

I'll plan on rolling in about 9:30. Let me know if that too late gor the early risers , chomping at the bit to get frost bite on their nose.

Raining now in Madras.

In the past two years we've never gotten going very early. What with the late night drinking and the camping breakfast and then gear up we're usually in the road by the crack of noon. I'd like to hit the road earlier than usual and ride more miles since I will be on the aprilia.

Here's a big bike suggestion for a route which takes in Camp Creek rd, Dayville to Izee road along the South Fork of the John Day. 240 miles with lunch and fuel in Dayville. A quick trip up to the Painted Hills is possible on this route. Or make it a really long day and from the Painted Hills take Gosner road to Ashwood, then Madras. That would add probably 60 miles. Just depends on how much it rains tonight. If Gosner is really wet, it's a no go.

There are several bail out options with this basic route. I think it will all be below the snow line.

Tim, that is pretty much exactly what I was going to suggest. I would love to go spend a few minutes at the painted hills and I even pre road a bit of the South Fork of the John Day River yesterday to see the condition.

It's great. I mounted a new Heidenau on the front of my aprilia today so I wouldn't be on purely street tires for this weekend. I normally don't like out&backs but with the snow in the Maurys it might be tough to avoid.

It looks like you're up a creek with a paddle or two.

Oh shit!

I think I made a bad assumption that most of the riding is on dirt. Can anyone give me a rough idea what the percentage of this spring break is on asphalt?

Probly not too early.
This is a big enough group that rides will likely be spread out, some early, some later.

Sounds like an aweful lot of pavement.......and a lotta miles....
I'm on vacation, that's beginning to sound like....work :eek

That being said, I've not ridden dirt along the South Fork John Day, and I've skirted all around the Painted Hills, and have never actually seen the main Monument Area just NW of Mitchell.

Is there any chance we'd make it North through the Ochocos toward Mitchell with low snow?
