Toughest side racks for attaching ammo cans??

I looked around and while I found a few threads comparing side luggage, I didn't really find to much on side racks themselves. Above all else I'm looking for good crash protection as I tend to bail on a semi regular basis. As for luggage, I'm planning on going cheap for now and mounting ammo cans as panniers, later I'll probably go the pelican route once I'm more ready to drop the cash. Any suggestions?? Thanks for the input.

I use the pelicans with the Happy Trails Racks and the mounting kit.

Check EBAY, for the Pelicans, I paid $65-$75 for mine.

For good or bad I have had the Pelicans get knocked off the rack without bending things.

I was told the road "gets a bit slippery when wet"...........I couldn't stand up

I've got the Holan rack on mine, it's been thoroughly crash tested and has held up fine. Watch out with the ammo cans though, I tore my meniscus in two places after my knee got caught between the bike and the ground.

My Holan racks have taken 5 or 6 falls in gravel without any dents or major nicks on the bike. Of course, this isn't going to help you since Holan no longer has an NA distributor

I'll second the recommendation to go the "trash can" route for luggage. I picked up a pair of sea horses for less than 100 shipped (don't remember the exact price). They've held up well over the year and I think I'll continue to keep them. They are fairly light weight, really waterproof and can take a heavy beating.

Rethink the weight part for ammo cans - they can easily easily top 10-20 kg per box, vs 1-2 for the plastic options. That can translate into a miserable ride, especially since the weight is out on the sides.

I've been interested in using ammo cans too. I'm still waiting to see if anything other than happy trails comes up before I pop on them.
