Jumping a DR650

Anyone ride their DR650 more like a dirt bike/MX than a dual sport? Get much air? What mods do you have for getting decent air?

I get air occasionally, but NOTHING like I've seen on youtube. There are a few dudes on youtube clearing MX-style tabletops on DR650s, but most of them seem to be a LOT more experienced in the dirt than I am. I get maybe 1-2ft off the ground...and it's spooky for me. The back end often feels like it kicks up if I'm not super-conscious about staying on the gas all the way through. I often land slightly more on the front wheel. I almost went over the bars once, but somehow I've managed to never crash after getting air. More often than getting air, I loft the front wheel by throttling off the tops of whoops or islolated humps. Occasionally, the rear comes up too.

I have heavier springs for my 200lb, and heavier oil in the stock shock and forks, but I can feel the total lack of rebound damping in the rear. Full adjustability for the suspension is definitely on my to-do list. The bike still feels like it handles it much better than I do. I don't believe I've bottomed the beefed-up suspension yet.

I slide the rear through turns a bit and wheely over things too, but like I said, there are DR riders on youtube that make me look absolutely timid.

I've tuned the carb for a bit better throttle response, and geared it down slightly. It wheelies much better than stock now. I also use an aggressive knobby up front if I know I'll be riding almost all offroad for a bit. The front holds a line much better than stock, and it's easier to hang the back end out with a milder tire back there. My bike is also armored a bit with an eared skid and some real handguards, and I installed lighter mirrors that can fold in. I also have big Fastway pegs that make standing easier.

I've ridden the DR cross-country around my mom's wooded and hilly farm, like a dirtbike, chasing my quad-riding nephew through ditches, trees, clay, grass, sand, and logs. In the same day, I rode it 1100 miles home to commute to work 2up the next day. It's truly a versatile machine, and it keeps getting better and better with each decent mod.

This is what I experience as well. Minimal rebound damping causes the rear end to come up as the weight is unloaded coming off the jump. Nothing like having the seat hit you in the ass and then landing on your front wheel. Softer rear spring, more gas or more damping would prevent it. Only more damping would benefit everyday riding. I'm using the 7.5lb spring from Procycle now & have no interest in going back to the lower rated stock spring. :)

most bikes, esp. dual sports are undersprung and underdamped from the factory, so its a simple matter of completely re-doing the susp. go to a shop and tell them what you want, you'll have a bike that can get some air and still bring home groceries.

The first time I did a small, 2.5' jump, the "near zero" rebound damping combined with the unexpected droop of the rubber mounted pegs, I mildly twisted both ankles.

The pegs are solid now, and the shock is currently in Cogent's hands and a new set of DRZ400SM forks are in the hands of FBI.

I will have some air-time video this spring

I know a guy who races his klr on a mx track, even clears doubles...DR should have no problem.

Early attempt to jump my first DR. Didn't have any experiance on a proper dirt bike and I didn't have the ergos set up right for me. I didn't wreck but wasn't flying either.

Used to clear a 30 foot table top at the intermediate MX track on my DRZ 400, but it had stiffer springs and completely revalved suspension with Race Tech gold valves. Turned a few heads doing that.

Would not attempt on a DR 650. Then again, check out Ivan Tedesco on an XR650L dicing with some amateurs on an MX track
