Great list and review of your experience.
I plan to do this trip one day on my Tiger XC, this will be useful info. Thanks.

Colombia is a great place, love it myself.
Playa Blanca is a great place to chill. The Frenchman who owns the hostel there makes some good grub.

Sad to see your trip end, but just loved reading your adventures here.
Big thanks for sharing, safe travels.

Cheers,
Dave

its probably been asked before, but did you only use your iphone for pictures? Some really excellent colors and contrasts if so.

I'm getting ready to head up to Laborador and Nove Scotia in a couple weeks on my Tiger. Really appreciate the detailed list of equipment, but I'll trim mine down a bit.

yes, just the iphone 5. most modern smartphones have excellent light chips in them. but they often don't calibrate that information in the original image. the contrast and color have to be massaged out of the raw information in some kind of post-editing program, in my case apple's native iPhoto application. it is just as much an artform as capturing the initial image, and just as much fun.

i also used an olliclip clip-on lens for shot in the first 3 months, until i dropped it somewhere in the rocks on the sea-cliffs of peru. i'd recommend one of these for it's wide angle, and light gathering properties.

Thanks for the great RR, I know it is a lot of work.

Also, thanks for the list; most helpful although I'm puzzled why some items are in red yet also have an "*". What's up with that?

the night before the return home

saturday, may 11, 2013 - final night in south america

the triumph and my rubber duck are now alone, both deep inside an enormous cargo ship docked in cartagena's port. they are destined for texas, and eventually portland. in the morning, i walk aboard a flight to panama city and then continue to los angeles and portland. in the evening, i will arrive in my downtown portland home after four months of intensive exploration of south american and myself. a tremendous sense of accomplishment has risen up inside of me in these final hours, surprising me and putting a smile on my face.

i'm certain that others could probably have passed through this journey with a fraction of the ups and downs that i've experienced. there have been times posting blog entries when i wondered - "are people going to think i'm nuts, airing all this laundry in the open like this?" this has been an intense experience. a very intense experience. but i'm very happy to now have a written and pictorial record of this adventure to refer to later. it is a snapshot of my life and it's priceless.

there is some nostalgia for the trip already building, and i'm not even returned. i'm going to miss the freedom of being on the bike in exotic places. i'll miss the thrill of pulling into a new city, into a new country. the randomness of encounters with locals, travelers and other motorcyclists. i'm going to miss washing my synthetic underwear in the sink and the satisfaction of hanging them off of a shitty air conditioner to dry overnight.

the journey is not over when i leave here. it will continue well into the weeks that come, and i plan to continue posting entries when i feel like i have sometime to say or to remember. i'll be looking through a new set of eyes at my life. this is the real value of travel for me - to step out of your own skin for a time, to rise above the trivial and the expected, and to explore with-in. i feel changed and i'll work to maintain the change. i need to make sure when i step off that plane in portland that i not look back. i think that's the real danger in this - to get caught up in your own pride. apply what you learn, and live in the present moment. no more, no less.

interesting emotions building like a tropical storm out at sea. i can feel the breezes growing stronger, and see the lights flashing in the distance. everything is dynamic. change is the only constancy.

i went for a walk at sunset tonight in my neighborhood to capture the final evening in south america. it's a saturday night, and there's a festive energy in the air. the first tropical rains of the season fell yesterday and this morning in torrents. it cleaned everything and everyone. it cleaned me too.

That was beautiful, your innocence (or what we call over here the "blue-eyed view of the world") and honesty are commendable.
