I'm not thrilled with the oil consumption others have reported, but I'm aware of it. Some report using different brands slows it down to normal. Time will tell. I did get the extended warantee just in case though. You are welcome to take my 2013 for a ride if you don't want to be hastled by the dealer. I believe I'm right down the road from you.

My son has a Subaru, a bit confusingly named an "Outback Impreza" or maybe it's "Impreza Outback"; I had thought those were two different models. He got it new during high school, went through college with it, and had been using it as his commuter car now that he's graduated and working. He's been pretty happy with it, has no immediate plans to replace it.

P.S. - There are a LOT of Subarus around here, where it snows more than Putnam County. Putnam is a bit of an oddity, small county with, what, only 6 towns in it? (I used to go full length on the Taconic a lot.)

I traded in a 2008 Impreza, 2.5 litre SOHC. The new engine is much smoother, though it doesn't feel quite as quick as the smaller, lighter car. But it's no slouch either. It's still under a thousand miles, so I'm taking it a bit easy for now. My only two complaints with the '08 were the transmission, which from day one was clunky and not at all smooth. The headlights were not to my liking either. The new trans is much better, something that wouldn't feel out of place in a Toyota. The new headlights are better but could probably be brought up a bit. I bought the base model with the alloy wheel package, so it's just a little plain. It's missing some interior refinements that the Impreza with the premium package had. I missed not having a hatchback though, so there is the added convenience. It also seems to have much more ground clearance. I high-centered the Impreza in deep snow once or twice. We'll have to see what the rest of this winter brings. Down side is fuel economy, so far I've been geting mid twenties, down from high twenties. Not bad for an SUV, but not great for a car.

Nice. Is it the cvt tranny or the 4 speed auto in the 13 model ?

The 2014 gets the CVT, this one's the 4 speed.

Nice car! I like the ground clearance of Forester but still prefer to roomier Outback. Im just not too crazy about the current model. It seems to me like they made it too SUV like. I think I will look for a late 2009 with manual tranny.

Now coming back to my original question. Any good mechanics out there you can recommend?

Well, it's only 55 miles from your new home. Ruge Subaru in Rhinebeck, NY. Very good reputation, well reviewed. Prices are usually 30-40% lower than metro dealers because the cost of doing business is much lower there. They also have all the tools and knowledge necessary to do the job well, and usually faster than independent shops. Might be worth getting a quote, and seeing what kind of feeling you get from speaking to them.

BTW, you got a schedule on the move yet?
