Day 2

From Sjaak: "Had to replace oil filter again.Still rode 24 mi today.
Snow has hardened a bit now, but its a struggle.Fell once today.
Front part of the R1 is now in tent to keep the engine 'warm'.
Overnight stop at: N70.53.078 W153.35.345

Video shows the starting point. This was shot during the testing phases a few days before departure. Since he shot this clip, Sjaak has hired a guide with local knowledge to assist in navigating the ice.

I just came across this thread. Looking forward to the updates from all involved. Amazing stuff.

I might be getting ahead of myself here, but is there a map showing his planned route from Barrow, Alaska to the stopping point in Florida?

I think on his website there might be a map, I couldn't find it right away, but I am sure I saw it on there, might have been in one of the intro videos. He does plan to make it to Key West. I emailed him off his website and hopefully will be hosting him as he passes through.

found it, this intro has some info on his route.

Has he altered the route to come across land and hook up with the Dalton south of Prudhoe Bay?

Day 4

Sjaak has arrived back in 'civilization' at the town of Nuiqsut (new-WICK-sit) Alaska. "...made it to Nuiqsut!
But it was a struggle, fell twice and I am totally exhausted!
It is -27.4F / -33C ...now. Hope to get the axle for the sled and my other stuff tomorrow, so I can continue my trip on land!"

Once in Nuiqsut, where he arrived last night, he will go overland to Deadhorse and link up with the Dalton. As a crow flies that is roughly 50 miles. Not sure on actual distance. However, I know he is doing it wheels down on sled. His guide from Barrow is from Nuiqsut and is providing intel on an overland route.

Thanks for the update. Was figuring he ditched the ice the rest of the way......was looking way unstable for him.

I am hoping it works out that we host him here in Homestead, FL on his way into the Florida Keys. I had emailed him a while back and plans to get in touch as he comes across the US.!!

Thanks again for the updates here!!

Original Route

Of course the plan to reach Inivuk was abandoned due the ice condition.

Once in Deadhorse, I'm guessing he has to stick to the Dalton to Fairbanks, then maybe over Dawson City, Yukon?? Although it's March and normal 'season' for motorcycles on the Dalton is June-July. And the road from Fairbanks to Dawson City is seasonal at best.

We'll hopefully get a call from Sjaak in a day or two and get the updated details now that he has completed the four difficult days from Barrow.

Actually it did. Day 1 was mostly ice. On day 2 he crossed the lake ice and overnighted on the frozen lake. Rough ice and an early melt/breakup was more of the cause for change of plans than anything. Climate change is a reality in the Arctic.

Nevertheless, he's covered the most difficult stretch out of the most northern point of US on a motorcycle in March, without a road! And hopefully will be able to reach the Dalton Highway on the next leg.

Oil filter blow out

We are backing up timeline wise on this video, as we wait for Sjaak to send video since he left Barrow.

You'll recall that Sjaak anticipated the cold start oil viscosity (pour point) and had a special blend made up. Even so, on cold start the oil filter seal blew out. He's disappointed in another delay, but at least it happened in Barrow and he lived to fight another day by fabricating a preheater for the filter.

Ice road sighting

I saw Sjaak today just after he left the Alpine ice road and headed east on the Kuparuk road system. The 15 k wind as moving the trailer around a bit. I think he needs a windshield.
