my girlfriend is colombian so I had the chance to go to Medellin in vacations, mannnn I'm just looking forward to move there!

What an amazing city! Haven't had the chance to ride there, but the road seemed pretty crazy and I didn't stop imagining myself there with a bike :)

Have fun man, and shoot pictures of the city and you definitely have to go party at parque lleras, it's really nice :)

I can't say I feel sorry for you in the least.

There is plenty of riding to be had here even if you aren't on a bike

I was at Parque Lleras last night.....not functioning at my prime today. Thanks for the note, you are one lucky dude.

Got up and went for a long walk about the town. I wanted to take a look at the apartment we would stay in next week, find some good breakfast, and inquire at the Shamrock hostel if there was any room.

No rooms available but I spotted JDowns super Sherpa in the parking lot and had to go up to say hello. Really nice guy……we’ll meet up later.

No room at the Shamrock and no room available at 4 other hostels I bumped into. Ended up firing off an email to the owner of the apartment, Justin, to see when we could meet up. He immediately returned the message and told me that he would be at the Tiger Paw Hostel which he also owns. Great! Got the last private room but it is only available for one night. What a pain in the ass! You bust ass and lay down a bunch of miles so that you can sit in one place for more than a day and you end up having to repack and unload each night. AWWWWWWWWW………life is so hard

Beer and Supermoto's......sign me up!!

So I’m sitting outside the hostel doing some typing and internet research when guess who rolls up? The freaken Dutch couple Marnix & Lisan. In Panama they decided against the sailboat due to all the bad reviews and flew their bike to Bogota (using Girag) where they spent a few days. Our hostel was full so they moved along but we were going out tonight. Micah also sent me an email, he made it to Medellin so we all reunited at the Shamrock!!

Al and I had to sneak a pic on the famous Sherpa unbeknownst to John.

Hey Double A,

You guys rock! Minimalist two up on a Sherpa with suds. That's super moto!

Hope to see you later this week. Knock on my door anytime.

Oh, and I asked about supermoto tires when I saw Al today and he uses Federico at:

http://www.motoshop.com.co/

It's on Calle 10A near Carrera 38 on the right hand side as you're going downhill right after the speedbump. Only a couple blocks from where you're staying.

Good basic video on youtube for checking your valve clearance:

Best,

Sorry to backtrack, but this is where I'm at reading up on your report. I thought I ought to say that a lot of the industry in Mexico is based out of the central states, but also that since NAFTA, a lot of industry moved from much of Mexico to the border cities in the form of maquiladoras.

Interesting point. I don't doubt that there is some industry in Mexico....there has to be. Simply an observation that I made along my ride. Even the rural towns of central america seemed to have a lot more going on just on a local basis than what I saw in Mexico. No worries on the backtracking,

Thanks Juanito! I was actually down at Frederico's shop the other day. It was closed of course but it didn't stop me from oogling at the 640 LC4 in supermoto trim.....or the CRF450X.....or one of my favorites, the Honda ATC 70 from '85.

I'm out the montana's right now but we will swing through the Shamrock later this week. Happy Painting!

Went and walked my usual route around El Poblado to get coffee and breakfast and swing through the grocery store for some fruit. On my way up Calle 10A with all the motorcycle shops I spotted a Barber above the Kawasaki dealer that was open. Thank Goodness!! I haven’t had a haircut in 3 months and it was really getting to me. It was on my list as first order of business in Medellin but everything has been closed. Here is my barber. All I said was cut it short….because that’s all I knew how to say. And for $7 I got a damn good haircut.

Then we did the typical room swap. Move our shit out, wait for check in, etc…. Tonight we stay in a dorm for the first time.

Then Al and I decided to jump on the bikes and head to Gautepe to check out a big rock. Straight out of El Poblado you hit the twisties to scale the mountains that we have been nestled between. A nice viewpoint of the town is quickly reached:

A local this morning told us how this used to be a favorite road of the FARC and how they would frequently stop buses and escort the Gringos off for a hot case of kidnapping. It has since been cleaned up. Not much to say, just a really beautiful place to be riding.

Local grub in the mountains: Rice, Beans, Sausage, Plantain, Salad, Avocado

These folks were taking alook at a pickup that just careened off the edge:

The rock is indeed large. There are 753 steps to climb to the top. I opted out and Al went for it. The view was already pretty good from where I was, it wasn’t cheap to get a ticket, my toe still hurts from the rock incident in Cartagena, and I’m wearing Motocross boots….so give me a break. I did sit and drink a beer while I gawked at all the lovely silicone trying to jump from the shirts of beautiful local tourists…..I believe I chose wisely.

Back in the saddle we jettisoned home but not before getting stopped by a group of cops. They just wanted paperwork but after talking for a bit we started joking around. They thought we were nuts for riding from the states to come down here. Then they started calling each other pussies and faggots and one asked Al to fight the “pussy”. “No sir he has a gun”. “Don’t worry he’s a big pussy”. Yeahhhhhhhh, so it’s time to get my paperwork back and I’m getting out of here before this gets any weirder.

At the hostel we met some German & English folks and headed for the Shamrock for food and drinks. While there we forced John out of his room to tell us stories of his travels.

Then off to the clubs. Dancing is definitely not my scene but heavy peer pressure and too much alcohol and I become willing to shake a leg. Alex watched the sunrise…..I didn’t make it quite that long.

I’m never drinking again! Moved out of the dorm and into the hallway and a few hours later into a new room that is now back downstairs. Nothing is going to happen today.

Except an awesome dinner of tortillas, beans, salsa verde, and jalapenos.....that were carried here from Costa Rica.

A real nice time in Medellin that only happens on Thursdays or the weekends IIRC is a trip to the Tres Cordilleras Micro Brewery tour, have it in English too, it's a good all around party with great scenery Makes for a pretty reasonable beer drinking night, take the wristband and exchange it for another free beer at one of their vendors after the tour and your regular tickets run out.

Here's the guy that runs the place, you can get some neat swag for the bike.
Andreas or something like, good guy:
