Great roads in and around the Trinity Alps.
Your route choice may depend on Weather ... Highway 5 and inland areas can get well over 100F this time of year. (Red Bluff, Redding). If too hot maybe stick nearer the coast.
Here is a good route if you have some extra time to explore the back roads.
Get to Garberville on 101. Lots of variations to get there. If super HOT stay on Highway 1, then cut over. If nice, take 101 the whole way ... or?
There are major Forest Service dirt roads all through this area as well. With good map or GPS you can find a lot of them. The below are all paved roads, but all very interesting and FUN!

From Garberville take Alderpoint rd. located at North end of town. About 5 miles in you'll come to a intersection, go North (left). Continue on Alderpoint to Highway 36 (Bridgeville).

Go EAST (right turn) on 36. Continue EAST to Highway 3. (about 8 miles?)
Go North (left turn) on 3.

Take Highway 3 to Weaverville. At Weaverville go WEST on highway 299.
Continue on 299 to Willow Creek. Go North (right turn) at Highway 96.
Continue on North on 96 past Hoopa. Continue North on 96 to Somes Bar.
Go EAST at Somes Bar onto Salmon River rd. Continue until fork in road about 5 to 7 miles in.

Go left at fork (North East) onto Sawyer's Bar road. (The communities along this road are akin to Deliverance hillbillies (Tweakers?) ... not friendly to tourists.)
Continue on this very rural rd. all the way to Etna at Highway 3.

Take 3 NORTH to Fort Jones. At Fort Jones go WEST onto Scott River rd.
Continue on Scott River rd. to Highway 96.

Go WEST (left turn) on 96 to Happy Camp.
From Happy Camp, go NORTH on Grayback rd. (AKA Indian Creek/Waldo rd.). This road will take you to O'Brien, Oregon. From there you are a half day ride to Bend. (mas o menos).

These are some of the best roads in California. Have a blast. Enjoy!

Killing me here...everyone is just barely off my track. I'd love to take you up on it but I don't think I can be there before the 14th. Trying to kill most of June in California because I prefer to be dry. And who knows what kind of delays in customs I'll see. Thanks for the offer and if I move faster than expected ill let you know.

Nice work. Great report. The humor makes the adventure.

Thanks for sharing. A great adventure, great entertainment, and one of the best reads ever. I hate to see it end.

These guys have endeared themselves to me over these months, and when I finally meet them here in Oregon they might just get a brotherly peck on the cheek from me (you're warned).
