Aether Ride Mojave

I've been making a pilgrimage to the Mojave for the Winter Solstice for the last few years and 2013 was no different, well a little different. This year I was on a motorcycle as opposed to my Land Rover and I'm real glad it worked out that way.

One of the most rewarding parts of exploring is showing like minded people your own hidden corners or routes. I'd met the crew at Aether through some gear tests/reviews I worked on with Overland Journal and was impressed on both a personal and professional level that these guys really got out there and did the sports they designed clothes for. They also host monthly rides that can be as mellow as a ride through the Malibu Canyons or as original as the Urban Adventure with Rawhyde. So, when it came time to have a little Winter Solstice roost I couldn't think of better company.

Sorting gear turned into a photo project, of course...

The next day five GS's of different vintages and my Tiger 800Xc met at Lamill Coffee for a little high octane to get us out to the desert. The forecast called for thunder showers in the L.A. basin, so we hit the road pretty quick.

We managed to skirt the weather until the 60 joined the 10 and it started raining sideways. Fogged face shields, 500 ft visibility if you weren't getting passed by a truck and did I mention the wind? There was a sliver of sun on the eastern horizon that kept us all pushing on. The sun broke out with nothing but blue skies 10-15 miles west of Palm Springs.

Once we reached dirt at the southern end of Berdoo Canyon, we stripped layers and those of us that believed lowering the tire pressure was the right thing to do dropped it down and those that didn't argued their point.

We made our way up Berdoo out of the wind and making good time...

...Until our tail gunner nailed a boulder with his pannier spinning him off the bike. A minor dent on the case, a broken mirror and a stuck horn button. A little cave man ingenuity and we were back on our way...

We reached the higher elevations of Joshua Tree and pinned it for town as the temps were getting a lot cooler and we still had over a 100 miles to go.

Roy's in Amboy along Route 66 was our last chance for gas. The sun was setting fast and we still had a ways to get to camp.

Rolling into camp we were greeted by the Aether Sprinter van, holding two of our regular riding partners that were out with injuries, who had made the drive out bringing steaks, chairs and wine, oh and of course the critical firewood.

The morning took it's sweet time showing up and it brought some bitter cold
winds with it.

We headed back home through the worst wind I've ever ridden in. A great 36 out of the city.

Nice photography and reporting, the low contrast look works well for the Mojave!

Thank you for sharing. I grew up in The Mojave, and now it's only a few hours away... need to organize a camping trip from SD!

Great shots and report - thanks!
