passing through

well, leaving next friday (18th) to head cross country to california. Planning to pass through your area and i'm looking for some good route suggestions.
our general plan is to spend friday night in huntsville AL, head out saturday morning.
hope to make it to jackson/vicksburg MS that night.

sunday, head for longview TX

monday head for Lubbock TX

tuesday head for Carlsbad NM

dont want to travel on the interstate, But do need to make decent time as we have a lot of ground to cover!

Suggestions on places to eat? Cheap places to stay?

we have our camping gear with us, but will most likely end up in cheap hotels to try to make some time as its a long way to San francisco!

What kind of bike will you be riding? There are some stuff interesting roads between Huntsville and Jackson. Not twisty, but curvy and a little fun.

You staying on the street or is gravel ok?

im on a ktm 950, henry on an f800. street would most likely be better as we are really trying to make some decent time.

Makes sense.

If I was wanting to stick to the backroads and still make decent time I'd do this: LINK, because I can't seem to get a google map to show up!

BW, can you fix this?

Anyway, you go through enough small towns that gas won't be a problem. You should probably fill up before you get on the Trace however.

And if you continue on toward Vicksburg, it's only about 50 minutes on I-20, but the Jackson crew probably has some more interesting routes...

The Natchez Trace is not "fun." It's relaxing and scenic, but never fun. Just keep in mind that there is a 50mph speed limit (or lower) and treat it as a ride through a 400mi long, 200 yard wide national park and it's all good.

Better to slab it and get it over with from Vicksburg to Shreveport. Prettier routes if you cross the Mississippi River at Greenville rather than Vicksburg.

If you do cross at Vicksburg, you may want to slab it all the way to Tyler, Tx and turn north on Hwy 69 to 380 which runs all the way across Texas and avoids the interstate through Dallas.

This but in Brownfield, TX head south on 385 to 180. 180 takes you to Carlsbad and past The Quadalupe Mtns. Beautiful desolate area.

Another option (if you are not set on Carlsbad) is to take 380 to 82 (just b4 crossing into NM) and ride 82 from Artsia to Almorgorda(sp?). Beautiful area as well and you can check out Whitesands Natl Monument. Either is a great ride.

Yep on both suggestions. Did the first one on the way home from El Paso and the second one coming home from AZ. Mountains just east of Almogordo are nice. WSNM is cool.

Don't miss Roswell also.

Made me look waaay back at routes. But here goes.

180 to ElPaso and the 385 loop to Hwy 28 NW to Las Cruses, NM. jump on 185N to Hatch then 187 to Caballo and 152 west to Santa Clara (damn nice ride) and 180 again for about 50 miles to 78. 78 will turn into 191 near Clifton and follow that until it connects with 70W. Stay 70w to Globe then 60w to Phoenix. 60w is nice for a while, then the suburbs start. But it is better than the interstate.

Keep in mind, this route was from 8 years ago, so no telling what urban sprawl has occurred since then.
