the pros and cons of owning a second hand gs1200

Hey there,
the big GS is an old fantasy of mine,
my previous experience with dual purpose bike includs an AFRICA TWIN, a DR650 and a few MX back in the days,
beside that im a sport rider, had a fireblade a gixxer and such, but than again -
the big GS is an old fantasy of mine,

A brand new one, fully equiped can retail as high as 50000$ ( ! ) here. no chance for me to get one.
but :
got the chance to buy a 2006 second hand with 45K miles on it, service history ohalinses on bought ends
tourtec side cases and top box and a wole lotta extra goddies , looks flawless.
question is: what are the pros and cons of owning one as "old" as this.
can it get me to spend money fixing things ?

thnks,
oren

I give up...how many U S Dollars are the 70,000$ you mentioned?

Sorry...I ran out of fingers and toes and my ABACUS is in the shop for maintenance.

More than likely the bike will need some work at some point. All machines do.
Those who are intimately familiar with these bikes can point you to the spots to
look over carefully but even they cannot predict the future for this bike.

It would be well worth the money spent to have a pre-purchase inspection done
by the best BMW mechanic you can find. Any problems found during the inspection
can be used as a means of negotiating the price, or if the bike has too many problems
you can walk away and be happy you didn't buy it.

Bought a used 2008

Last summer I bought a used 2008 R1200Gs with 25K on it. The owner had bought a dealer demo with a few thousand on it and had it dealer maintained with meticulous service records. He only used it to commute 27 miles each way to work and it had never been off road. I test rode it and checked it out and found no issues other than it needed a new front tire. After I bought it for 11K, I had Irv Seaver in CA do a full service and everything has been fine with no problems. I think the key is ensuring that service records are well maintained and the bike hasn't been ridden too hard. The big pro for me is I do my own maintenance now, thanks to the great help and comraderie of the online BMW community at large. If you don't need the latest and greatest, it makes good sense if you can find a good used one.

In 2010 I bought an 06 gs wit 35 k miles on it. Over the course if the year I put 16 k miles on her and then sold it for exactly what I payed for it. It had zero issues the whole time and the first owner even rode it up to Alaska once.

Go for it.

You get to have the same bike stupid people like me paid full price for.
(and would do it again - probably will if I am able)

Best do-it-all bike out there.
