LA Basin coast road

I am planning a trip from Oceanside north along the coast through the La area. I am going towards San Francisco. I need you thoughts on what would be the best route. Not the fastest but the route you would travel.

From San Diego I-5 north to I-405 to I-10W to Santa Monica and turn right on hwy 1 north through Malibu and Oxnard where 101 and 1 are the same road up through Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo. Then take Hwy 1 up the coast where it splits off from 101 north of San Luis Obispo and heads up through Morro Bay, Cambria and Big Sur.

At least that's the way I would go. Hwy 1 is nothing but stoplights, strip malls and traffic through Orange County and LA.

76 east, to 15 north, to 210 west, to 118 west...this gets you around L.A.

Now you can go experience the good stuff that CA can offer. JDowns pinned it. It gets nice north of Santa Barara. Watch your speed up there, LEO's are a lookin'.

Depending on the time of year you may want to include the Crest Highway if you are coming up the 15.

Take PCH from Oceanside on up. You'll enjoy the freak show on the way. Plus you can check out places like Laguna Beach, Huntington Beach, Venice Beach and Santa Monica.

You need to watch for the fog from Ventura on up. Contrary to popular belief, I find Santa Barbara to be a dump. Bypass it. Morro Bay is worth a stop. There's this big dome rock out in the harbor. Looks really creepy when the fog rolls over it. There's an elephant seal beach right across from Hearst Castle. That's worth a stop too.

From the LA area, area take the 5 North to Frazier Park, and then head west on Lockwood Valley Road to Ojai and Highway 1. That will take you through the Los Padres National Forest and some really spectacular twisties.

In Santa Barbara, take the 154 - San Marcos Pass Road east, up past Lake Cachuma until it meets back up with the 101 in Los Olivos. If you’ve never been in Solvang, you might want to turn back west at Santa Ynez, cruise through town and pick up a yoddelstruddel and a hot chocolate. Or stop at Pea Soup Andersons.

^^^ This. Or you can just take Cerro Noroeste to 166 to Santa Maria, thusly, then nip over to Nipomo for a steak at Jocko's. Mmmm... steak.

IMO.... anything north of Santa Monica on Hwy 1 is well worth it. the coast route from SD to Santa Monica area is, as stated in this post previously, one long beach town. Stop lights and strip malls, which is not bad if you're into that kind of stuff. There are some nice sights through the beach towns, Huntington beach, long beach, Manhattan beach, but it is stop n go traffic. Beyond Santa Monica through Malibu and into Ventura is O.K. but it gets a lot better north of Ventura and really opens up past San Luis Obispo.
