oil filter on 2012 F800GS

Hey all

I have seen and read a few different articles i am sure this has been addressed before but cant get a firm answer.
So..... I ALWAYS use the oilfilter from the dealer however this time it did not have the bmw logo on it and looked alittle different i went on a quick ride no issues at all. My question is i have heard of and seen guys using car filters on their bikes, how much different is it? There are alot that fit my bike and are few dollars cheaper, would it hurt the bike to use a quality car oil filter? Can some one explain the diff? Is it pressure?

Also not to start an oil thread but is it true u are to use conv oil first 8000 miles or can i switch to syn?

You can use any oilfilter of any brand as long as it is designed for your F8. It may be a good idea to buy known brands instead of no name parts.

You can change to fully synthetic oil any time after running in phase. Lots of old myths you should not believe as they refer to engines built between 1950 and early 80ies

to be honest I'd stick with the OEM one, except someone could confirm that car filters have the same characteristics, meaning they will filter with same quality (size of particles and debris) and the pressure relief valve works with same pressure. The price plays no role for me. I dont change hundred filters a year so 15, 20 or 28 bucks is not really important...

Check out Calsci. He makes windscreens but has a good discussion of filters in general here and bike specific cross reference here. I have used Mann filters from Beemer Boneyard with good effect. I have used Bosch 3330 car filters as well.

Thanks i will check these out the reason i ask is cause the break in i want to swap my conv oil and filter every 1000 miles is this too much. I have heard alot that break in is important and other guys say ride it like u stole it . I use the bike on alot of dirt so i change oil often ill check out the other ones thank u

Yes, I think it's a 17mm socket. They are less than $9 on Amazon right now. I've been using them for the last 4 changes. Nice not to have to mess with an oil wrench.

I noticed a bad review from one of the previous links but my experience has only been favorable.

Now here's another question.......Can I remove the oil filter without having to remove most aftermarket Bashplates?

I would say that the bash plates worth having you will need to remove. Most - if not all come off in a matter minutes.

I take it as a good time to check out the condition of the plate and bolts. The circle of GS'rs that I ride with use the Black Dog Cycle plate. It and Mod would be my recommended form the coverage and build quality and material. That said, I am currently running the Ricochet plate which has held up well. It doesn't have the same coverage as the two mentioned above but when I was on a tight budget it fit the bill. Looking at some the more adventurous rides I have planed in the future I will be going to a MOD or BDC plate.

Important thing to note is compatibility with crash bars.

I'm leaning towards the MOD plate. Great price, made in Canada and compatible with the ALTrider crashbars.

My Adventure Spec bash plate I have to remove for oil change. I suspect you will on most other plates too.

So we covered the filter part, here is the oil part (this is what I feed the F8GS and my wife's F650GS):

No I am not starting a oil discussion, but simply stating what I use, with superb result. I also have an 2005 ST1300 / 100K, and the engine is silky smooth. No issues. (15w50)
