Fork leaking.

1982 R65LS.Front wheel off, getting some oil coming from up above axle hole.Damper rod allen screw not tight at all.
I took it out and cleaned bolt and gasket.Retightened until the rod turns. Is this tight enough? If not,how can I hold the rod to get tighter? I do not have anything else apart yet.
Thanks.

I'm not really familiar with that model but it sounds at least similar to other models. Get a properly sized socket for the nut and grip it with some vice grips. Put the proper sized hex into the bottom of the damper rod through the socket. Tighten the socket, but don't get crazy the damper rod is soft and easily damaged necessitating full disassembly. The copper washer is supposed to be replaced.

the bolt goes in the fork tube. you should be able to hold the tube (perhaps unclamp and push down the garter first)

If the fork is assembled, have someone sit on the bike then tighten the bolt.
