Cycle World's Rolling Concours
The restoration of my R100S has been done for a year now. I've put about 3,000 miles on it without a problem, so I figured it was time for a road trip. I was reading Cycle World magazine a few months ago and saw the ad for their Rolling Concours to be held in conjunction with the Honda Hoot in Knoxville Tennessee. MapQuest showed Knoxville to be about 750 miles from Sarasota, so...you know how these ideas get started
I headed north last Wednesday. West of Ocala near Inverness, I ran across a Gold Wing trike specialist. The proprietor cane out and told me the conversions started at $9,000. Told me I'd be back one day. I turned north on 19 and crossed into Georgia near Monticello. On through Albany and then northwest on 530 to Columbus. I stopped at a motel outside, of all places, Ft Benning. Its been 30 years since I was in Ft Benning. Back then, they made me jump out of perfectly good airplanes. On the road early Thursday (swear I heard reveille) A local suggested 27 north. It runs up the west side of Georgia, parallel to Alabama. Perfect road for airhead travel. This is just south of Pine Mountain. Made Knoxville Thursday night and slept like a baby. Wandered over to the Honda Hoot Friday. In the parkung lot was a CX650 Turbo. This thing was absolutely brand new. I didn;t even know Honda made a 650 Turbo. Sitting at a vendors booth. Gold Wing folks think of everything. Fido moto carrier. I had whined to Krautbikeman about not being able to attend BYOB this year and told him that he and Randall sucked. So I called him at work, told him I was in Knoxville and he wasn't. I told him that he could tell me that I sucked, but he didn't. He did tell me to bring him a Gold Wing brochure though. He's a classy guy. An airhead lost in a sea of Honda's. A lady in the parking lot told me the S looked "cute." ![]() I wandered downtown to the World's Fair Park where I won Best of Show. Course I was the only one entered. Back at the motel, cool stuff started to appear. ![]() Saturday morning and registration for the Rolling Concours. Holy Crap!. If you're an old bike nut, this was the place to be. I love airhead S' (S-s?) I'm not a Ducati fan, but this thing is....schwiiinnnnnggggg! Gotta love CBX's. Wes Cooley to the white courtesy phone. The GS1000S. Sewing machines. CB350 four cylinders. I had a 72 Kawasaki 750 H-2 and this one caught my eye. It took me a coupla minutes before I noticed that... ...this 750 was a 1000. ![]() 'Cause I know Mutt likes Norton's How sweet is this? The obligatory Water Buffalo. ![]() I couldn't get away from this thing. A perfect BSA. The owner said the bike was sold new in Knoxville and was celebrating it;s 50th birthday. The elegant, yet simplistic presentation stand. The flags are a nive touch, no? ![]() From time to time, I've thought, "What about a Cafe Wing? A GL Supersport?" Evidently I'm not the only one thinking this. This thing even has nitrous. Really. Red Smoke, 3rd from the left, next to that damn Honda Turbo. Best of Show, from Touring Sport BMW in Greenville SC. A fun bike to look at, lots of period pieces and custom bits. Sounds great too. No glory for the S. The Honda CX650 Turbo took first in my class. People see, "TURBO" on the muffler and go gaga. Strangely enough, all three winners in my class at the Honda Hoot were Hondas. I'm from Florida, we need a recount! ![]() I had planned to ride the Blue Ridge Parkway on Sunday, but the morning dawned with a light rain with more to come. I loaded the Krauseres and headed south at 7:30 AM. I rolled into Sarasota at 9 PM. The airhead never missed a lick and ran like a freight train at 75-80 mph all the way. 27 years ago, it was a top notch touring bike and today it's still no slouch.
