Frame material?
I am curious if anyone knows what grade of aluminum BMW uses on the front upper frame section?
Most Asian dirt bikes use 6061 T6...but this is BMW....

http://www.ascycles.com/Illustrated_...indCat=46_0304 It is definately cast aluminum...that I know, I am curious if it is 6061 or 50 series 40 series...or what. Also is it heat treated? Just to clarify why, I am welding a 1998 Honda CR 125 R steering neck to that front upper frame and putting inverted forks on it. I am doing it similar to Fabrice's build {Fab418} so I just want to pick the right rod to weld with and then have it all heat treated...but 50 series aluminum is not heat treatable. The CR neck is 6061-T6 heat treated aluminum from what I have found...just need to know. Thanks

Why?
That is the same steering neck/upper frame as a GS. The part number is the same as the RT. I know the bike will be in Some Assembly Resquired....but this is specifically an OILHEAD question.
