Body Plastic part question

Probably a silly question but what the heck... Have a 950 ADV 06,

On the 990, the lower front has what looks like a replaceable expendable plastic sort of a guard, it looks in pics like some 950's have this as well. Mine is a all black one,,, is this a retro fit-able part?

I dont think they will fit the older 950 tanks. I think there are some OEM CF available.

On the Orange body bikes its the black part that looks like it screws on to the lower front leading & side part of the tank , kinda framed buy the crash bars on most bikes.. I've seen carbon fiber covers there,, but I dont want ot spend that much money on something thats expendable... :)

Yeah that is them in the above pic.

Have a look at parts fiches to see if they will fit - but I am pretty sure the my older 950 (04) tanks didn't have the mounting points for these.

That said they may bolt up without the rear bolt.

They fit with a little bit of trimming. I had them on my 950 for a while. Went back to crash bars and then Safari's.

The 950 has two mounting bolts at the lower side where the small plastic guards mount. The 990 does not have these, but has the rear bolt instead.
I have the carbon protection parts mounted since 2005 and they are very strong. After some years I painted them to match the body color. Very happy with them. Cheers.

Those 990 guards "can" fit on a 950 tank, but it takes work. The 990 tanks are indented to take that guard, and as mentioned, the 990 has a rear mount point imbedded in the tank that the 950 does not. But, with a little carving on the guard, it can fit on the 950:

You can go to a hardware store and find a plastic hole cover that will fit in the rear mount point, and you either glue that in place or melt it to the guard from the inside with a soldering iron. Also, my bike has crash bars, and I had to cut the lower little "vein" that sticks out from the guard because it hit the bars.

In the end, I like the guards. They were much cheaper than the CF guards, and I have scars on my tanks where the PO crashed the bike on trails. I think you do need some more protection there even with the bars in place. One day I'll get around to making my own carbon fiber guards, but these will work for now.

I have an 06 950. I have destroyed expensive carbon fiber gaurds somewhat easily. I bought the plastic gaurds and trimmed and mounted them with relative ease. A little black silicone is what I used for fit and finish. I must say the plastic gaurds are extremely tough and functional. I've tested them plenty . I would highly recommend them.

Cool, for 30 bucks I guess I can fiddle around.. Original owner of mine only put two scars on the bike, 1 on the front edge of both sides.. ANd those plastic bits would cover it up nicely..

+1, to a T. Those fancy carbon guards didn't last long. I've replaced the plastic guard on the left side once, but it did it's job, and it was cheap.
