Classic example of an Engineer's view of things vs a Pilot's!

The Engineer relies upon data points and the Pilot relies on real world experiences to develop their procedures....

That point would be irrelevant for me. I don't plan to ever drop my 990 in the rocks. I also plan to live forever.

So far, so good.
+1on both

I was following Geek up a section of loose rock & he stopped, I put my feet down nothing there, and over it went. Ripped the peg mount right off the frame.

Now this was on a KLR650 with normal length Pivot Pegs. Those pegs didn't fold all the way up & the big pig just ripped them off (didn't hurt the pegs at all though).

So I rode it up to the top without a peg & then borrowed some vise grips and used that as a peg to get down the mountain & west to Silverthorne (where I got the peg mount welded back on to the frame).

So when I saw CJ's extensions and read about the shearing of the hardware in case of a drop/crash, I thought that it would be worth a try. I have dropped it on each side in sand & dirt with no ill effects, and I figure that I'll drop the 990 in the rocks sooner or later.....

I really like them - YMMV
Hello, this sounds very interesting, i have problem regarding the foot pegs. i've recently bought a CRF250L and I've just heard that they suffer from damaged frames during a fall even from a stand still position. the damage is exactly on the foot peg's mount's which are directly welded to the frame.

now i was wondering if this was caused be the foot pegs itself, since they don't fold all the way up, they just transfer the shock of fall through the frame hence making a nasty dent. they fold about 45 deg. i prefer to change fairings instead to having a damaged frame so i was wondering if by modify the pegs and let them fold all the way up might prevent this in case of a fall.

i uploaded a photo showing the type of damage, and there is visible the stop that is build in the foot peg to let her stop folding at certain angle, i was thinking to cut that piece so to let the foot peg fold all the way up

any thoughts?

Post-revival reminds me I never posted the after pictures here.

Thanks to Olas for the pegs. After a year of use, they are holding up beautifully. Much more comfortable when standing on the pegs.

The CRF is just a bad design. Needs more gusseting. A smoother weld would also help. I've welded up a few XRs where they put footpeg and kickstand mounts onto thin tubing.

Funny this thread started. I am working on 990 adventure pegs as we speak and they will be available end of this month

The peg is 2 parts. The pivot is steel and has a built in bottle opener

Then you order the top plate in what ever color you want. Blue. Orange black or silver

Earlier an inmate noted using 2 sets of old KTM pegs.
I've done that for my 950 and 690.

Here's the ones on my 690.

You can see the underside in this pic.

I can do a set of these in under an hour including paint. I am lucky enough to still have an OLD can of Malcolm Smith Husky Silver Epoxy Enamel paint. works well on pegs.

The leftover tips from the cut off base pegs I sold off to another inmate for $10 to put on his.

CJ's Design bolt-ons, I wasn't buying the "shear the bolts off during a tip-over either", thought the hardware that came with the extentions was to small, upgraded to 10-32 stainless button heads, holes in the extentions were already 3/16's so the fit for 10-32 was perfect.
