Big cross county Nevada trip need tires

I have searched and studied but would like reassurance from the inmates before I spend the money and time.

I plan to mount knobbies on my 990 for a 1200 mile cross country Nevada ride with the Dirtdevils of Reno in May. There will be some nasty mud, water to negotiate and sand, rocks, steep at times. I will be taking it easy on the pavement and want all the dirt traction and rock handling I can get.

At this time I am planning on TKC80 front and a Terraflex or Tractionator rear. Thanks fellow desert riders.

Questions:

1. Where can I buy at a good price?
2. Considering I run a 150 Mefo now, is a 140 ok for my stock rear wheel?
3. Is this tire selection what you would try? If not what?

I'd use a 606 front and a 908rr rear- exactly what I just put on my bike.

The 140 is fine.

I've been impressed with the Pirelli Scorpion Rally, front and rear.
Much better front tire in the dirt than the 606 and I think the back has better
traction than the 908.
They seem to have a really strong casing and can take the pounding
I give them riding the CDR in 5 days.
I've used them for my CDR rides on my 690 and they will be the tire
I'll use while riding the Trans Canada Adventure Trail this Summer,
on my 990.

Also a very good price.

I don't think that these are dot. Not that I care as these are for a dirt ride avoiding pavement. But are these considered more for smaller bikes than the 990 A?

I've used both 606 front and 908 rear combos on my 990 and 950 SE, aswell as 606 front and Tractionator Rear combo on my 950 SE. I think the 908 will give you better wear on road, and will provide all you need off road, but the Tractionaotor will give you much better grip in the dirt, rocks and mud. My rear Tractionator was 70-80% worn after a 12-15 hr. off road rally and a 3 hr. road burn. But I was loaded with fuel, bags and moving at spds. of 130 -140 kph.on the tar. The 908 will last you longer than that, butnot as much aggressive grip.

That all being said, I have a brand new Tractionator waiting to go on my SE again. They are much less $$ than the 908, and I'll try it again with limited ashpalt use.

I think you'll be fine with either, as long as you keep spds down on the tar.

I run the dunlop d606 front and rear if I know i will only be riddding 1500 miles or less.

The Mefo rear tire size 130-80-18 is only $109 on ebay or best offer. Not a bad price.

FYI they are a DOT tire.
IMHO the 140/18 size and the beefy construction qualify them
for big bikes.

These remind me a lot of the Michelin Desert tires, which I really liked on my
GO!!!!!!! bike.

I do like the front Scorpion better than the Desert.
