salt water immersed bikes
Any hope? The one I'm eyeballing has already been hosed off and seized after the guy put 2t oil in the cylinder/crank. I expect a full teardown but is there any chance of cleaning out the frame enough to keep it from snapping in half. 2t Husky 125 that would get raced. I'm thinking it is garbage no matter what is replaced.

If they are cheap enough why not try it. Marine stores sell salt treatment sprays for jet skis. If the engine is trashed you can part out the other parts if they aren't ruined and you want to go through the effort.
Is the spark plug out? Maybe the 2T of oil is creating a hydro lock. Just thoughts.

I haven't seen it yet. Kinda iffy if it is worth anything at all, decent, running examples of the same bike are between 800-1500 bucks. If I got it for nothing it probably still wouldn't be worth fixing, just really wondered if just the bearings and electrical stuff would be trashed or if the engine cases themselves and the frame could have suffered enough damage since December's Sandy to ruin it all.

I'd budget for a replacement wiring harness and the other electrical equipment. The rest of the bike can be dismantled and rinsed off in your bathtub.

A month + of salt won't have started the corrosion train too far down the tracks? I'm thinking the frame probably has some trapped inside the tubes. I think the water was at least 3-4', might have even been been fully submerged.

I don't know,it is probably too far gone. Salt water is hard on motorcycles.

No experinece with salt water dipped motorcycles but I grew up near a salt water beach in NFLD and would ride my bicycle near the water. The salt gets absolutely everywhere, every nook, seem, crevis, into the spokes ends, inside the frame, every cable, etc, etc.
I'd take a look for curiosities sake, but it would have to be free, and I'd remove every single part, bolt, and screw. good luck

Thanks guys, he is firm on near $700 which is almost a running example anyway. Going to have to use caution with all the bikes and cars that got exposed in Sandy, I'm sure some will start to be moved inland thru poor sales or looking to rip people off.

Wanna see my car?
Only takes a couple weeks for the salt to attack the brakes when I park it at work after a long drive in the salt. And then parked next to the ocean......where I go to work and see first hand how fast it can corrode alloy parts. And I mean it......fast.![]() Got a tub big enough? Dump all the parts in there with water and a gallon of Salt Away.Well, read the instructions first for proper dosage and use, shouldn't be rinsed off. Leave them in the tub for a while.

Im going to post this in a separate thread, but this was from an F650GS my wife purchase from Florida, and Im thinking this is caused by the salt water breeze??
![]() gas fill tube this fuel pump is shot, the pump itself was rusted to the plastic ![]() again, Im guessing salt water in the tank, how else could it get this bad? when cleaning the tank out I found rust, and what appears to be oil only thicker. smalls

Thankfully he had already sold it and I'm betting the buyer paid too much, like $1 was too much! No the problems I need, I found one with only a few hours on it for very little money. Original tires and barely a scratch on the plastics.

Say goodbye to the wiring harness and most anything that touched the electrical system.
Galvanic corrosion is an ugly thing. |
