I can only agree, been there the last 3 years, and going back again in 3 months.

Serbia and Bulgaria are my favorite countries in that part of the world.

After climbing up to the plateau road condition improves and we are suddenly on perfectly smooth gravel. PJ almost crashed into a two meters deep ditch which was dug across whole road. Obstacle like that must have some warning signs, right? Well, here they used few football sized rocks, placed few meters away from a ditch from both directions. This could have ended up ugly...

It took forever to reach bottom of a canyon. By the time we got to the lake it was already to dark to look for firewood. We pitched our tents, had dinner, drunk those few s and just stared at stars. It takes so little for traveler to be happy...

Pic from this section 2011 pretty gravelroad

now all new asphalt September 2013

no more gravel, the section from Susicka canyon to Zabljak is now full asphalt

be careful, now the cars are driving faster then on gravelroad, but the asphaltline is very narrow

the part from viewpoint after Nedanjo into the canyon was prepared for asphalt in September 2013, i think in a short time the whole road from Nedanjo to Zablak will be asphalt :-(
september 2013

I heard they were planning to pave road down to lake Susicko... Was really hoping that it will take them few years to actually do it. This is sad news from our point of view, that lake was't easily accessible before, I'm guessing it will be crowded from now on...

Durmitor is loosing gravel roads extremely quickly... Only few are left and it's just a matter of time before they're all paved. Still, scenery is amazing so it's definitely worth a visit, just don't expect to ride off road.

On the bright side, as Twinmike said, there is plenty of great off road riding in other parts of Montenegro.

I guess it's to be able to get more rich tourists to the area, but the same is seen in the rest of the world ... one might call it progress.

What we sometimes forget is the most of the roads we like are actually "normal" roads which are used by the locals to get from A to B.

Absolutely right.

And the use of the term "off road" is mostly wrong because they are just dirt roads. Matter of fact I never ride off road.

Hi,

I guess most people heading to the Balkans this year are reading here and may have even contacted Gliga at one time. Is anybody teaming up for an ADV-ride? I was about to start a thread under Trip Planning, but thought, I'd ask here first.

@Gliga, sorry for the hijack. I had a feeling you wouldn't mind.

Pip

Yes and yes.

My GF and I will be touring ex-yu and Albania for 3 weeks from June 9th on. We'll be spending most of our time in Bosnia, Montenegro and Serbia, but will also have shorter bursts through Slovenia, Croatia, Albania and Kosovo.

If we run into each other i'd gladly share a or a camp spot.
