Late model airhead metal air snorkel

A friend has a metal air snorkel in his box of spare parts. The upper air intake on the square air filters. All the ones I've seen are plastic. Never seen one out of aluminum.

Anyone know anything about it? Pros? Cons?

BMW switched to the plastic one when they changed the filter gasket. The metal one will not work with the new filters.

The cast parts vary in quality a great deal. The ones I have worked with will fit the airfilter just fine but they had other issues. The horns on the top aren't cast right and need modifying per the bulletin. They often cause running issues. I found a cast airbox bottom that wasn't letting the transmission to seat anywhere close to right on the engine case for the miscast airbox. I guess it had been like that since new? That was probably ruff on the input shaft?
