Ok, let's start at the beginning. You see, my sweetee is not much of a party girl. She's amazing at many, many things, but she just doesn't care for groups. Ok, so nobody's great at everything, however, it was bumming me out that there was never much celebration on my birthday. So we found a great compromise, now it's a given that I get to do a nice ride on my bday every year....

This year, it would be to the Eastside of the Sierras with my friends Jack and Eric.

Day 1 - The Friday morning ride across the valley was actually pretty pleasant. Hot weather was on the way but we had a mild tailwind, and traffic was light. We started climbing Ebbetts Pass and we were totally in the groove of the sweepers and rollers at the top, having a great ride.... and then as we crested the top and started to descend into the valley we saw this up ahead....

 photo EasternSierrasJune28-July1002_zps2ffb201f.jpg

 photo EasternSierrasJune28-July1004_zpsbe919e64.jpg

Yup, that's where we want to go......

 photo EasternSierrasJune28-July1007_zps3c9fcd03.jpg

So, we decided to do an aboutface and head back up the pass until the storm blew over. We found ourselves at a nice little campground off Highland Lakes Road. Nice spot to hang out for a bit while the storm blew by...

 photo EasternSierrasJune28-July1009_zps6f9e7d4b.jpg

 photo EasternSierrasJune28-July1012_zpsbc22f6eb.jpg

After an hour or so we decided to see what was doing.... Did I mention I love riding Ebbetts...

 photo EasternSierrasJune28-July1025_zpsa6d2223a.jpg

So far so good...

 photo EasternSierrasJune28-July1027_zps28605be7.jpg

We checked in with the campground host at Silver Creek who told us there were 60mph winds and hail over at Markleville. Temps dropped a good 25 degrees and there was mist everywhere as we got down to the valley floor.

 photo EasternSierrasJune28-July1028_zpsb3aa7f3f.jpg

 photo EasternSierrasJune28-July1029_zpsc644f809.jpg

Hail the size of grapes on the roadside....

 photo EasternSierrasJune28-July1030_zps0de557b2.jpg

As we started the climb up Monitor Pass we came across lots of mud and rock slides....

 photo EasternSierrasJune28-July1031_zpsda5165ba.jpg

Things started mellowing as we crossed over to the east side...

 photo EasternSierrasJune28-July1035_zpsade5044e.jpg

I never tire of this view....

Day 2 - I really developed an appreciation for the beauty and the vistas of the area on this trip. I've been on 395 many times, but it's hard to appreciate your surroundings at 65mph. Getting off the pave onto the dirt roads was an eye-opener. It was a short ride from Walker out Eastside Road before we hit dirt on our way to Risue Canyon.

Risue Canyon was a great ride with more rocks, ruts, climbs and creeks than I got on camera.... having too much fun riding to stop...

On to Sweetwater and Masonic Roads for the northern entry to Bodie....

 photo EasternSierrasJune28-July1064_zpsd29116c7.jpg

After lunch in Bodie we took the main road out to 395 and hit Dunderberg Meadow.... sweeeet!

 photo EasternSierrasJune28-July1086_zps8b5c925d.jpg

 photo EasternSierrasJune28-July1090_zps3cec0637.jpg

Virginia Lakes @ 9000' was our stopping place for a cold drink....

 photo EasternSierrasJune28-July1095_zps15e89675.jpg

We headed back up 395 and got to Walker... and it was our turn...

 photo EasternSierrasJune28-July1100_zps57deccf1.jpg

 photo EasternSierrasJune28-July1104_zps6680b7c9.jpg

Didn't last too long....

 photo EasternSierrasJune28-July1110_zps024029b2.jpg

but it did still look angry as it left.....

 photo EasternSierrasJune28-July1114_zps32f09081.jpg

The West Walker Motel is a 50s era joint that has been updated with a/c, micro, fridge, tv, coffee makers, etc. Nice tables and chairs for sitting out front. Rooms are small but comfy, and the ladies who run it are sweethearts. When I was checking in Jack was by the bikes and one of the ladies came out from the back and hollered at him "You want a beer?"....

 photo EasternSierrasJune28-July1116_zps496108d4.jpg

We had dinners and breakfasts - both excellent btw - across the street at the Mt View BBQ. Jeff, the owner, was doing a Wounded Warrior fundraiser this weekend. We asked him how he got started doing that and he told us that when his wife died about 4 years ago he had to make some decisions as to how her organs would be donated. He said he went down the list and one of the options was to donate to returning soldiers. He then told us that her skin alone went to 25 different individuals (I gotta confess, my jaw kinda tightened and tears came to my eyes when he told us that). Since then he has been doing these fundraisers for Wounded Warriors.....

 photo EasternSierrasJune28-July1117_zps01871751.jpg

Super nice guy.... plus he serves great food.... and the waitresses are kinda saucy....

Day 3 - Jack and I were on a different schedule than Eric, so the 3 of us rode together one day, Saturday, then Eric headed home on Sunday. We were moving kinda slow after the big day Saturday but we headed north anyway to Leviathan Mine Rd which turned out to be kinda boring gravel except for the detour which you need to take to get past the mine. There were a few clencher moments through the rocks and ruts on the detour, but the rubber side stayed down....

(I'm trying to get better at this picture-taking stuff.... i get lots of inspiration from you guys.... )

 photo EasternSierrasJune28-July1140_zps58efcd0d.jpg

After Leviathan Mine we then found our way down Monitor Pass to Morningstar Rd, which started easily enough up a gentle dirt climb....

 photo EasternSierrasJune28-July1143_zps01ee0879.jpg

Jack has decades of dirt-riding experience, so the spurs called to him frequently....

Onward...

 photo EasternSierrasJune28-July1152_zps221b6d37.jpg

Closer to the top of Moringstar Loop. It was a gnarly climb getting up here on the big bikes. Lots of ruts and rocks. Had more of the same going down. We both were happy to have survived it in one piece....

 photo EasternSierrasJune28-July1155_zps89371487.jpg

Looking south...

 photo EasternSierrasJune28-July1157_zpsae072483.jpg

And north...

 photo EasternSierrasJune28-July1159_zpse5e738a0.jpg

Spurred on by another spur....

 photo EasternSierrasJune28-July1168_zpsef2db79f.jpg

We headed down to Markleville for a cold drink. We talked to a local for a while who suggested we try Poor Boy Rd.... okay, why not.... this is the start of PB road

 photo EasternSierrasJune28-July1171_zps44dd80d8.jpg

This ended up being one of our favorite roads.... lots of flowing dirt going up the hill....

 photo EasternSierrasJune28-July1175_zpscc11e72b.jpg

Back at the West Walker Motel we capped off our last night with a little help from Sailor Jerry...

 photo EasternSierrasJune28-July1176_zpsd0f30716.jpg

That's about it for this RR. The next morning we had a deeelightful run over Monitor and Ebbetts until about Arnold when the temps reached triple digits ... where they stayed for the rest of the day. It was a scorcher for sure.

Thanks for coming along... Happy 4th,

Brian Luvs Crvs

Dar, Glad you liked it. It was a heck of a way to spend a bday. Couldn't have asked for better....

UpST8, I'll have to keep reading your RR to see whether you got wet or not. I know you've been sweeting a bunch.... I've been following The Chronicles of Moe.ron for some time now. You're making me want to spend next April or May in the Los Padres NF...

I was skimming through the Day Trippin' section and saw "Ginormous Breasts go to the Eastside," and I thought "Hell yeah! I'm gonna check this out!!"

Good report anyway.

Thanks Tony, you are so right!!!

And thank you too for your Byways books! I planned all the dirt portions of this trip using your Sierra Nevada Byways book. I've been using your California Coastal Byways book to plan routes in the Central Coast, Lost Coast and Trinity Alps areas as well. Invaluable information...

PS - Sorry if I made you blush....
