You guys are looney! You're all talking about the difference in 5-6 hours of labor and a few hundred bucks vs. Thousands of dollars and 40-80 hours of labor.

Getting the block out of one of these is kinda an epic job and just gaskets and seals are insanely priced.

Just pointing out that there is always an "ideal" way to do something but that way may not make the most sense for all kinds of reasons like cost/benefit /time etc.

That is a part of the ultimate plan. I just need to source the parts and it can't be done with the vr6. So need to make the vr6 last until I can source all the parts.

I hope you can get this all done by the time your daughter gets her license and starts driving.

Check the mains, if good, button it with new rod bearings. Change oil a lot more in the future. May want to run some ATF before each oil change to clean up engine. Good luck.

I'd try the bearings, just to see if it'll work. Assuming, everything looks good with the Micrometer.

Hopefully all the stuff that thrashed your bearings has been removed by the oil filter and isn't roaming around the engine, waiting to toast another set of bearings.

I'd be interested to see what that filter contains, I bet it looks a lot like the oil you took out. There might even be some bigger junk in there.

Eek

Good news...I've definitively found the bad news (and also confirmed that I have way too much practice at this sort of thing and that my initial diagnosis was correct based on what I heard when it happened)

It always bugs me when you can't find that "ah ha moment" of diagnosis. Well, I finally pulled the rest of the rod caps off it measure the journals and found the #3 rod had spun its bearings.

The unfortunate thing is that this journal has some slight ridges when felt with your finger nail. They seem to be from the bearing material though. So going to try to polish this one journal up first and check it again to see if it smooths out.

FWIW, all the journals measures the same at just about 0.007 under the factory new spec, including the #3 with the spun bearing.

I hope that piece there is the old bearing and not the crank! Polish, plastigauge, check oil pump, if all good, button up and enjoy.
