I went to look at a used Mercedes once. When we started it up it had a knock like that. The seller swore up and down it had run perfectly when he drove it the day before. Needless to say I walked away from it. He called me a week later having had it to his mechanic. It was an unplugged plug wire. I had already bought another car unfortunately. I think it's unlikely a severe rod knock would appear out of nowhere.

Does the noise change with load? Hold the brakes and apply some gas, does the noise get deeper or louder? Oil pressure normal?

Cool2

I haven't messed with it.

It's been snowing on/off since it broke and we are under a blizzard warning and the van is outside until I reassemble one if my other cars and can move it inside to work on.

When I started it the other day there was virtually no knock until I put it in gear, then it started knocking and stayed that way. Knock gets more intense with rpm. (with or without load)

A friend of mine had an S10 with the pos 2.8V6 that developed what sounded like a rod towards the rear of the engine. Good thing it was under warranty. He got it back in a few days, ended up being loose torque converter bolts. At least that's what he was told.

That thought actually crossed my mind, I will check them once I get it in the garage.

Fortunately it's not a daily driver for anyone so it can sit a few days until I reassemble the 951.

Hi Cole sorry to hear about the noise from the engine,
i would suggest to pull the dipstick and drip the oil onto a black piece of cardboard ,
look at the oil in the sun use a magnifying glass,
and you will be looking for metallic particles ,
if you find them then the engine is making metal.

Thanks Stan. I'd thought about that too.

As you know the weather isn't exactly cooperating with this task at the moment.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed for something silly like a TC bolt that wiggled itself loose.

The noise seems louder on the right side of the motor (left side with you facing it). What else is in that area?

Left side (facing van) is where all the pullies are. I took a few moments today to check out the van some more before we get more snow.

Nothing going on with any of the belts or pullies.

Checked all the TC bolts and they are tight.

Dropped some oil off the dip stick to look at it and good news......I got to play with my ancient macro lens!

Unfortunately that is where the good news ended again.

Here is what the oil looked like on a glass slide....um....okay, it was the bottom of a pint glass

....and just for my buddy Stan I also dropped some oil from the 928S4 on the pint glass. Its the amber colored stuff. Can't see it so well in this picture but the 928 oil is perfectly clear (and about a year old) vs the more grey/brown colored Eurovan oil that is filled with particles (and only weeks old)
