Damn. That's terrible luck. Any idea what your next option is? TDI swap, perhaps?

Sweating a bit about our VR6 van now... At least we bought an extended warranty from the dealership that sold it to us. I'm hoping at least one big component fails before it lapses.

Well, never know what caused it looking at the inside of this engine. I'm sure if you take care of yours it will be just fine.

I've been shopping for a 96-97 Jetta or Passat 1.9L motor. Unfortunately most people think they are made of platinum. Some of these guys are asking $5,000 for a used 300k mile take out

I'd still need to track down a manual trans too!

There are a few reasonably priced ones out there but most are 1,000 miles from me and guys aren't willing to ship them,

We will see just how bad the motor looks in the pan first.

I don't drive the thing enough to ever "really" justify the cost of the swap with the difference in fuel mileage. Though it would be cool and probably sell for more if I decide to get rid of it someday.

Sorry to hear that. I've always wanted one of these for when I retire. I've driven a class C and could not stand all the pitching and rolling it did on mountain roads, so the Eurovan looked to be perfect. Are the 5 cylinder ones a better choice to the VR6? The VR6 looks way better to me though and the older ones are probably pretty beat by now, although I could get one with a stick.

I've seen several 250k + miles examples of both motors. Which is why I was fairly confident in this motor only having 152k on it.

We will just have to crack it open and take a look. With as much crud as I found caked on the inside of this motor who knows how well it was really taken care of.

Hi Cole so did you look at the oil in the sun?
If you use a black piece of cardboard it will show up better,

from the oil test you did that looks like deposits that have been circulated in the oil from disturbing internal parts thus dislodging dirt.

You need to look at it with sunlight and a black back round to see metallic particles clearly.
Or do you see them on the glass clear as day?

It had a very metallic sheen to it in real life. The camera really didn't catch it.

Simply won't know till I can get it in the garage and drop the pan to look.

Just waiting on parts to arrive for the 951 first.

Just need to find the right motor if it needs one. The TDi swap is looking pretty attractive

I'm not overly stressed about it I've got plenty of cars and bikes to drive . I just look at stuff like this as an opportunity to upgrade
