I feel your pain, brother. I found out yesterday my new-to-me Smart might need a new $1K airbag ECU. That's what I get for forgoing a PPI.

Hi...I've been lurking on your side...

I got a 2002 Eurovan Camper(Winebago) with 120k on it. If you're thinking of dropping the oil pan I believe that you have to remove the right CV joint in order to access the pan bolts there?

Removed mine and the pan was crystal clean. Changed oil every 5-7k miles. I know it's overkill but..lookee there, it's "clean". I also always use 0-40 Mobil 1. It is possible that you have heavy condensation in the pan and your gas tank also has a lot of water.

Good luck...

cheers...

Hey thanks!

I'm sure condensation was possible. It was a New Jersey car it's whole life till I brought it to the insanely dry Colorado.

Might get a look at it soon. My fuel lines showed up for the 951 last night So I'll try to assemble that today so I can get the van inside.

Well the weather was MUCH nicer today. Got the new fuel lines on my 951 so that I could move it out of the way to work on the van inside.

HATE having the 951 outside though.

The knock today sounded much different and seemed to be very much valve noise from the right side of the motor. Guess I will just have to take it all apart and look.

I have a spare room. Its yours if you want to help finiish the garage. I can show you some of the local rides as well!

The number one sign I've done this too much already?

.....this was only an hour of work from driving it in the garage

When I started it up to pull it in the garage the knock REALLY sounded like it was coming from the valve train. I've also had some lingering cam codes so I figured I would pull the valve cover and take a look. Not a darn thing to be seen. Cam lock slides right into place when at TDC. Chain is tight. Nothing visually wearing or broken.

Maybe tomorrow I can get and assistant to crank it for me while I watch and listen. Then pull the pan and look there. Unfortunately, that will require removing the right wheel, disconnecting the lower suspension arm, removing both the inner and outer driveshaft to access the pan bolts. FN silly!

.....and if my left arm wasn't busy holding this, I'd be out in the garage working on it(she is the whole reason for the project)

Thanks.

Got 5 minutes with the van today. Had the wife crank it while I looked/listened with the valve cover off. Everything seems tight, unbroken and moving as it should.

But.....the oil flowing in the head is obviously filled with metal filings. So the next step is to remove the whole passenger side axle assemble so that I can get the pan off.

Don't be bummed about it.. it's better to sort it out now than on the side of the road freezing cold....

Totally agree. Not overly worried about it. It will get fixed and we will have a blast with it.

Just haven't had time to work on it much.
