New (to me) KTM 525 EXC
Hey All,
Last night I picked up a 07' KTM 525 EXC. Its my 1st dirt bike and wanted a little advise. I am not sure what I am feeling is normal or needs adjusting. I feel I can't get the idle low enough. There is an unknown aftermarket air filter and a stock exhaust. Is there a baseline or a known good setup on this bike? Why not use the stock air filter? What is the basic carb/jetting setup for sea level to say 4000ft? When I "parking lot tune" it and go from idle to floored, it stalls. Seems like a serious bike that I have a lot of growing into. Joe

read til your eyes bleed
http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=201026 although it's geared towards the d/s end of the spectrum, tons and tons of good info here imho ktmtalk is a better place to find parts / specific answers to specific questions

The RFS motors are supposed to idle a little high, below around 1500rpms the autodecomp is affecting the valve system. You want it to idle just above that which is a little high compared to other brands.
I also just picked up a tagged '07 but it's the 525XCW, baiscally the same bike but it came without lights. It's under the knife at the moment for some trickery |

i gotta '06 450, alotta the same stuff.... lotta voodoo in the carb, accelerator pump's gotta be tuned right or it'll bog and stall, lotta voodoo in the jetting and needle too.... changing to an OCEMP needle is pretty standard, stock ones are way lean low/mid.... get into the RFS section at KTMTalk and you can learn alot, there's some stickys about carb tuning that you can learn alot from..... the motors ain't all that, but you gotta be smarter than it.....

If it were mine, I wuold get a jd jet kit, new fuel screw that can actually be turned, new air filter and start from there. While I'm sure it could be set right to run without spending on the above items, the installation of these will give you piece of mind, have it set up correctly and allow you to eliminate these items, as problems, if issues continue to persist. Good luck great bike
