Day 7 Sisters to Diamond Lake Oregon

Up and atom. One week into a 2,600 mile trip down the left coast now.
We grab breakfast, brush the teeth, zipped on the gear and headed out once again. We really like Sisters.

Another fantastic day ! You Pacific Northwest guys are full of Sh*t! We still haven't seen as much as a cloud!

Didn't take long for the rocky, and or sandy, slow going stuff to kick in as we negotiated the NF roads that wind past the East side of the Sisters. We were begging to get past second gear.

I stop to pump my bilge

Like the trails were intentionally cut with views in mind. Notice the backdrop once again.

The ever present snow capped mountains.

The the trail got easier and afforded us a higher cog selection

I could see this cutoff on the GPS and could tell it reconnected with route so John and I took it.

One of those small little spurs, unintentionally found that turns out to be very fun.

Bruce on the SE

We caught up with one another at the entrance to Tumalo Falls.

We were hungry and made a detour to Bend for lunch. Bend was like a town out of a Burbank movie set. I mean everything was perfect. The houses, the lawns, the sidewalks, the cafés and stores..... and certainly, the women
Seriously, Bend looks like a helluva place to live !!

Yea, we are "The League of Adventurers" and gentlemen, we don't eat cold beans from a can...."Please pass the bonn bons Bruce"

After lunch we head further south and Bruce gets reprimanded by the Bend Mountain Bike/Tree Hugger Club

Day 7 Continued

After lunch we double back and get back on the route.
Bruce stayed in a bend a few more minutes to enjoy another Latte Frappé Bend'e, so he was way behind. A group of mountain bikers had seen Mike, John and I pass by already and were at the ready for Bruce. "Hey you cant ride through here"
Bruce:
"OK....I'm from Jersey"

We were well spread out on the long stint to Crescent where we regrouped and gassed up ,set our sites on Diamond Lake. Winigo Pass was like a freeway compared to what we been through and was great to get into higher gears....

Me and Mike regroup strictly out of luck

My Oregon ATV registration decal proudly displayed

Not seeing Bruce since leaving Bend, I was admittedly a little relieved to see him pull up behind me at the bilge pump station.

Hey ! A cloud !!

We literally pop out of the forest across the street from our fuel in Crescent.

Fuel and a Cliff bar were in order.

We are pushing for Diamond Lake to grab a cabin for the night. Loosing daylight, we haul ass.

OK, for some reason I miss the sign and keep going on the route. The others were wearing their glasses and didn't

Consequently I would keep riding alone for another 45 minutes as darkness draped the deep conifer forest. I began to realize something was wrong

I made my way out, found the blacktop and made a run for the cabin getting there just before dark.
The girls already done bike maintenance, showered and were enjoying a beer when I pulled up. Gee, not even a "hey what Sasquatch get you" ?
Na, we trust each other that much, we know, if separated, we will be just fine. Ya know "The League of....."

Diamond Lake Oregon. Or is it Oregun ?

I quickly clean my air filter, shower and we head for dinner

After a great nights sleep we wake up and start to sing in our heads "California here we come".....

NEXT UP:
Day 8, Our last day in Oregun & we cross the Trans America Trail were we had been in 2007 as we ride the :

This just keeps getting better. I can't wait to see the Lost Coast through your camera. What a place.

Bend Oregon

Frank said it in the ride report.
What a great town. We were all quite taken with Bend. The place has a very cool feel and we were welcomed by everyone we met. It's on my places to get back to and spend a few days.

Day 9 Diamond Lake to Ashland Ore

Next morning we are underway by 0900.

We continue south skirting the Rouge River on great forest service roads that go off in every direction. This section has so many intersecting turns and trails running parallel, we end up making a few u turns as we struggle to stay on route.

The surface was perfect though, rockless hard pack 2 track.

No complaints

Deep conifer forest

Some parts of the OBCDR are in fact marked.

We intersect the Trans America Trail in Prospect. Gas, coffee and Twinkie were in order.

Nice 5th & 6th gear riding down this "conifer corridor"
This is the densely wooded Rouge river National Forrest.

John and I pair up.

Mid afternoon we near Ashland in southern Oregon.

We decide to call it a day. We are in no rush. John and I take the opportunity to change our oil. The gas station across the street gives us access to any tools we need and an oil pan.
My rear tire was chewed up pretty bad due to the volcanic rock we had been riding over. I knew it would not last to Reno and I start to call around but, no luck.

The owner John, would take no money from us. Great guy.

Fresh oil change, we wheel the bikes over to the motel.

Bruce lubes the chain

We could get used to this

Later while taking a walk to diner, we saw this very cool Toyota Land Cruiser. With snorkel.

UP NEXT:
Day 10, we will cross over into the very remote northern California wilderness. A wilderness that was obviously on fire somewhere.

As we came to the end of the Crown Jewels section of the OBDR, I was very excited for what lie ahead. Each year we alternate sides of the Mississippi for are group trips. We all kick in are ideas, and every time were due to go long, I say California! And that’s where were headed!
My task would be to get us from Ashland to the start of Tony Hugels route in Happy Camp. Mapsource produced a maze of roads, and for a while I thought we might be doomed to cross the border on I5. Then I came across a GPS file and ride report from back in the dawn of Adventure Rider, 15 Days On The Pacific Crest http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=47645
These guys were expert riders and there is plenty of stuff in their report that is extreme for a big bike. I had to make sure we were not headed for some colossal terrain or worse, a dead end. I loaded R-dubbs tracks into Mapsource. And while flying around in Google Earth, this section was looking to be one of the most spectacular of the trip. It did not disappoint.

Day 10 California !

The Continental breakfast starts our day.
Old Hwy 99 takes us on a fun , serpentine ride to :

As we wind our way toward the Mt Ashland Ski area , We are treated to our first spectacular views of 14,179 peak of Mt Shasta.

Everyone's off the bikes snapping pics.... At the end of the parking lot, the road turns to dirt and becomes NF-20. A Easy FS road that gracefully allows us to divert some attention to the breathtaking sights of the the Siskiyou Mountains

The weather...........yea. Need I say more ?

Mount Shasta in the backround

Our last taste of Oregon was a spectacular one !

We stop to snap some pictures for you guys.

With the WABCDR and the OBCDR "Crown Jewels" now behind us, we ride in part:

Beautiful forest roads.
Our good freind Tony Huegel would spice things up a bit later on once in Cali.

[IMG][/IMG]

Meadows everywhere

I dunno..... We heard it always rains here
You left coasters just trying to keep everyone else away with these rumors ?

Wrangle Gap

The Panzer

Some of us, ah, softer, members had the Gerbings on.
Yes, turned on.
We met a fella hunting on a ATV, he took a group shot.

Next up:
