XR 400 As A TAT Bike

I've got a plated XR 400. I plan on using it this summer on the TAT. The bike is in good shape and the motor is fresh. We'll be doing 2000 miles of the TAT.

Has anyone ever done the TAT on this bike? What are things I should look for? How well does this bike do on the pavement. How does this bike carry luggage? Extra maintenance?

I hate to break it to you but there is no big lie. There is no system. The universe is indifferent.

XR400 will make a fine TAT ride - just try not to load it up and turn it into a heavy pig and be sure to have enough fuel capacity for 250 miles. Maybe work out the gearing so you can change front sprockets and not have to change chain lengths so you can gear it for your conditions. Have fun

I had an XR400 for about 9 years. I went on several multi-day point-to-point trips with it and it worked out fine. We stayed in motels and did not camp.

I can think of two possible issues with the TAT. You really should be street legal to do the TAT. My 400 wasn't but I never got caught.

Second I think you need a 200 mile gas range a couple of places in Utah and Nevada. I guess you could carry extra gas.

Finally I don't remember the seat being all that comfortable.
