Going Off Road
![]() At last year’s Touring Weekend in Maggie Valley, many people were interested in dual-sport riding. They wanted to explore the multitude of dirt roads and trails that the mountains of western North Carolina have to offer. Many did get to enjoy some off-road riding on our 54-mile dual-sport tour. This year, however, we have a more adventurous option for going off road; a condensed six-hour version of MotoMark 1’s Basic Overland Confidence Course. This Intro to Overland Course is geared at teaching riders of adventure bikes how to get the most out of their machines once the pavement ends. The class is taught by Mark Brown, formerly the head motorcycle instructor for the NC Highway Patrol. Mark uses in helmet radios to coach riders as they each take turns leading the group. While riding behind, Mark films each student as they apply what they’ve learned. Later, he and his fellow instructors review the footage individually showing each participant how to further improve their riding. During the class you’ll ride up and down twisty mountain roads, dive deep into the Appalachian forests, and splash through mountain streams. Whether you ride a big BMW, a little Honda, or anything in between, you’ll leave the class having increased your ability and confidence in both on and off road riding and along the way you’ll be treated to some of Appalachia’s most stunning views. So if you’re itching to splatter some mud on that shiny new adventure bike, be sure to sign up for the MotoMark 1 Intro to Overland Course when you register for the RoadRUNNER Touring Weekend! Courses run on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday of the Touring Weekend. Each class is limited to eight students. If you don’t have an adventure bike of your own, get info on where to rent one here. Register now! www.motomark1.com
