For this reason you should stay well away from KTMs - they require constant attention and repair. And if you're thinking of using it off-road, you better have deep pockets!

Yes these bikes require more maintenance than most bikes do. But it's not that bad, most things are easy to fix like another clutch slave cylinder or a water/oil pump rebuild. Having said that, the KTM adventure is like a complete package with everything you want.

Hey 2 Dogs

Purchased a 2008 990 last spring, best choice for a scooter I have ever made. Put 4000 miles on it before the snow flew and shut us down. One oil change and 1 rear tire was the extent of maintenance. Were some small repairs after a rather hard brush with a tree but that was not the bikes fault. I came off of a XR 650 R that was dual sported. Oil change is a pain, but you can get it done before you finish the 6 pack. The only reason the oil change is a pain is all the plastic that needs removed, the task is not difficult just time consuming.

I hear all this crap on OC about unreliability, it is BS. Probably posted by girls on BMW's.

Admittedly I am probably a bit above average in mechanical skills, but I have not had to use them.

By it you will not regret it, if you do they are very easy to sell. Pops

Not trying to hijack your thread 2 Dogs - I am very much in your shoes 2 Dogs except I am now hot after a 990 SMT or a Tiger 800 Roadie. No burning desire to head off-road on my motorcycle, have a mt bike for that. I am presently riding a '07 Wee farkled up nicely. My son also rides an '07 Wee. Its because of him that I sold my 2nd Gen FZ1 and bought the Wee. Now after a year of riding it I am simply bored with it. Don't get me wrong, its a very competent bike, but I equate it to driving a Toyota Camry no excitement. The FZ1 was over the top with excitement! My problem was I had very little self-control on it. Rode the crap out of it pretty much every time I got on it. Haven't ridden the SMT yet, but have the Tiger. For those of you with the SMT does it beg to be wrung out all the time or can you enjoy leisurely riding it. I am completely sold on the Adv style of bike just want one with better brakes, suspension, stronger motor and still reasonably light weight. I also rode the Super Ten and it was too tall and heavy for me. 5'8" 30" inseam.

4000 miles! What do you know? Get back to us when you've done 10 x or 20 x that. I had no trouble with my KTM 950 ADV during the first 4000 miles.

Each year I join a group of around thirty friends for a week of hard-ish riding. There are five KTMs now, but three have joined in the last two years. It's a standing joke that the KTMs are always the ones needing attention - oil top-ups to more serious stuff. The only other bikes to have broken down over the fourteen years was a Honda VFR 750 - an aftermarket alarm was playing tricks with the electrics (not Mr Honda's fault) and an old Suzuki SV1000 that suffered terminal engine failure through poor maintenance (read none).

What's wrong with girls on BMWs?

I'm with you on keeping it sane. I have a Tuono to give me my hooligan fix!
