Sony action cam dissapointing!
Yesterday I bought the new sony action cam, and had a hell of a time trying to wifi it to my iphone. I'm going to get another VERY basic Drift x170.
here are the advantages from my point of view 1. It takes AA batteries 2. Has LCD screen so no need for wifi 3. takes full size SD card ( minis very easy to loose in the bush ). 4. no setup time 5. don't need to bring my iphone/battery charge It seems that I could do what I want with the Gopro black but at $500+ compared to $140 the only advantage would be Full HD but I just want to be able to look and remember quality is not that much of an issue, I don't run a TV station. Anyone else got an opinion on this? Cheers Gordo' |

Why not get a Gopro HD2 or even HD1? They both offer full 1080p HD recording and you can buy a backpac LCD screen. And with the HD3 out now, they have come down considerably in price.

Why are AA batteries important? Best thing I ever did was get rid of my old Go Pro that took AA batteries. Bloody things never lasted, had to use Lithium batteries cost a fortune. Go Pro has rechargable batteries spare battery 20 - 30 bucks 3 sets of lithium AA's and you have wasted that money. Get a Go Pro sliver with a screen, I have done all my movies without a screen until I upgraded to a black recently which allows me to view it through my smart phone which is good but I hardly use it to be honest. I use my GoPro hero HD most of the time tell the truth, bullet proof, easy HD it is now called the GoPro white. TB

For $40 you can buy a 1280 x 720 HD camera the size of a keyring fob. It fits to anything with a velcro dot. My mate runs them on his r/c aircraft, fantastic footage from the air. Will just as easily velcro to a helmet peak or dashboard, and at $40 it's no big deal if it gets trashed either. They are ultra-small, cheap, lightweight, incredibly effective, what's not to like?
Use the search term "keyring camera 808 #16" and google, there's sample footage, discussions, analysis, all the info you would need to make an informed decision. Save yourself a shitload of money too.

Interesting, cheap, small etc but that is a toy really, its comparing apples and oranges against the GoPro's, Drifts and Sony to name a few. Good one for the kids maybe as a present and stop them asking to use my GoPro's TB

I just bought myself a Contour Roam2 which hopefully the postie delivers today.
Was contemplating the entry level GoPro but personally I like the bullet shaped design cameras. The other thing I liked about the Contour is the fact you don't need an additional housing to make it waterproof. |

yes.. fantastic picture quality let down by the 2hr battery life and no replacement available.. HOWEVER.. they can be hard wired to 12V with a removable back cover which IMO is a HUGE bonus.. audio is also better than my GoPro HD2 was..

Why don't you just get one of these?
$350, proven concept, backwards compatability, you don't have to take your iPhone, you can press the buttons in the old fashioned way.... I bought one when they first came out. It's perfect for what it is designed for...

i bought a Sony recently, to go with the GoPro 2.
It has a better picture quality, I think. If you use it inside the waterproof case the camera needs to be turned on before you put it in the case & stays on. THERE IS NO OFF SWITCH!! To turn it off, I open the cover and pull the battery. The cards are micro SD. Now how small is too small? Adult male fingers have a less than ideal radius. Inside the case, there is a lot of noise from movement. Same as the Go Pro. BUT, the GoPro has the water absorbant inserts that stop the noise. It is almost impossible to see the LCD display in sunlight, or with polarised sunnies on - same as the gopro. The record/off and hold switch on the rear of the case is possibly better than the gopro buttons, but maybe only because it allows you to 'hold' whilst the record is on against leving it it the hold off position when not recording. Then again, you have to pay extra attention to it to make sure you push the hold switch to the correct position at the correct time. Yeah, bit confusing. The Sony was bought with an understanding of the above and the idea of just having it mounted on the bike and keeping the gopro for chest and helmet mounting. The reason I bought it was because I had a Myer gift card and they dont do GoPro. Whatever you buy, get an editing programme and use it before you post stuff up.
