What's definitely 'interesting' is what some drivers are doing with their "disapproval" (from post #7):

"...asked if motorcyclists ever experienced a vehicle trying to prevent them from lane splitting...67.2% of all respondents...mentioned that they had experienced this."

on page 36, shows why I feel we need a good law rather than wait for legislators to outlaw it. We don't have many supporters.

Table 58. Q14. How would rate your approval or disapproval of lane splitting
Q14 Frequency Percent
Strongly approve 60 8.3%
Somewhat approve 204 28.3%
Somewhat disapprove 188 26.1%
Strongly disapprove 268 37.2%
Total 733 100.0

There was a little bit of info about this back in May in the news. It is kind of a lengthy report, but somewhat interesting.

CHP Issues Lane Splitting Guidelines

Just saw this in the recent AMA magazine. The AMA link is broken, but here is the link to the CHP:
http://www.chp.ca.gov/programs/lanesplitguide.html

An article here:
http://www.asphaltandrubber.com/news/california-lane-splitting-guidelines/
and another about an attempt to set lane splitting restrictions:

LA Times has a Poll on their website now asking if motorcycles should be allowed to split lanes. A the moment we're on the losing end of the poll. Please go vote YES!

We'll always be on the losing end of any public poll - motorists don't like motorcyclists coming by them so close. Key for us is to maintain support from LEO, and to state our case calmly and intelligently when we have the opportunity.

I like how it said that they have never defined this before.

http://web.archive.org/web/200008160...l/answers.html
August 2000 CHP website, all they added to this was the 30mph cap. Granted they did remove this from their website September or October 2000 and it has not been there for 13 years.

What I find interesting is that 3 states are proposing making splitting legal and they are using almost verbatim the guidelines that CHP published. This makes me think there is a bit more communication and it may be the start of a larger movement to legalize it in other states. EDIT: Texas, Arizona, Oregon are the states I know of - TX died, AZ was vetoed by the gov, I dunno about OR.

Regardless of that, I really hope this is the start of a trend in educating non riders about how it is legal and they can be ticketed for obstructing motorcycles. I also think it good they are stating a lot of what should be obvious but probably isnt to some riders when not to split.

to complete my generic rant I will now comment on how I think non-riders need to be educated in what should be common sense but isnt that motorcyclists wave to each other, if you see one waving but do not see the other know there is someone there and watch for them. And riders wave for safety :)

I think it is less about coming close to them and more about how its not fair that motorcycles dont have to wait but cagers do. Everything has to be fair now, schools have banned birthday invitations cause some kids may not get any, everyone gets a trophy no matter what, etc. Its insane, things arent fair but with splitting that is something each person in a car can choose to change if they want.

Sharing means caring. It is one less vehicle in your way preventing you from getting where you want to go.

Does the DMV motorcycle handbook (pdf) count? Lane splitting has its own section on page 17 and is listed in the table of contents.

Ok ok that is the 2013 edition (it briefly mentioned it before but it is MUCH more prominent now) however dmv.ca.gov and chp.ca.gov have said on their pages for a long time it is legal if done in a "safe and prudent manner" but they havent clearly defined what that is, until now.

It's nice that it is an active discussion in California for you guys. Even if it was explicity defined and legal where I live, people would still react with anger and intent to hit our asses here in the South. Ole Bobby Joe Ray in his PU truck would make a hood ornament out of a motorcyclist, especially 'one of dem jap bikes'.

Rednecks would be shooting black kids if it were legal. Americans do amazing things when something is either legal or illegal.
