1. Drill the head and insert a cylindrical rare earth magnet available from electronics suppliers.
2. Break open a computer hard drive and scavange the magnet.
3. Heat & shock magnitisation works but never feels strong enough to me.
4. BMW gear box and final drive plugs are made magnetic. If it fits or can be made to fit it's a reliable & effective solution

Wouldn't it be easier to buy one. They are on eBay for as little as $10.

I run a magnet on my car oil filter. It catches metal particles that are too fine for the filter to pick up and I'm certain saves me wear on the engine. Just how much I can't say, but I consider it cheap protection and I can move the magnet from car to car when I sell. Big 'dozers often have magnets built into them as well for the same reason. They catch metal particles (only the magnetic ones of course but that's most of what wears) and reduce the overall wear and tare on the motor and gearbox/transmission.
As for a magnetic drain plug, the transmission in my car has one, and I'll be working out some way of putting a magnet on my next bike either in the drain plug or the filter.

WILL_S ... nice one!

ha ha excellent

on the upside tho' mate is you get some of the same effect as those magnetic under blankets. a big relief in aches and pains in the lower half of your body. right from your ankles up to your nuts.

some of the older blokes would happily put up with the extra fuel use to not have to stagger into the pub.

and before anyone suggests it, yes, i have already been to the patent office with plans for a gearbox with 6 ratios in reverse. simplest way round the engine running backwards issue i reckon. still some confusion with the gear lever tho'. will it be 1 down, 5 up or will it go 1 up, 5 down?
