By Tuesday you can have spent the $90 for the Bentley shop manual, learned more than the tech knows about your transmission, and have adjusted those shift cables everyone's talking about...
Then if you still have issues let him have at the slave cylinder.

he's right about the bentley manual, but if you don't have a place to replace the slave cylinder then you're better off bringing it to a shop.

BTW that link posted to TDI forum is for a 02A transmission, not an 02J. Yours is actually much simpler, all you need is a nail/allen key/ other thin straight object:

also, you could run Redline brand transmission oil which was, last time i checked, significantly cheaper than the OEM VW stuff at the stealership.

Thank you sir. The resident expert/owner of the VW shop said that it's definitely not the tranny itself, nor a cable adjustment (hydraulic system on this one)...he knows the shifting is tougher on cold mornings, but he took my car for a spin and could tell that the clutch wasn't actuating like it was supposed to...plus it's not returning to it's normal position when disengaged...

Yup, wish I had a garage, but love city life...working on combining the two... Used to be able to do car work at work, but our employer pulled the plug on that one...

The slave cylinder is leaking...apparently on this particular model of VW the cylinder is in amongst the transmission...so...they have to get to it, recondition/replace/redo the clutch...quote: $1330...

DOT 4 brake fluid and pulling the clutch up with your foot every now-and-again is a lot cheaper than $1330...

Ah they've got it out at the shop, love the car otherwise and would like to keep it long term, so I'm just gonna get it fixed...sucks costwise, but at least she'll be good...how long do clutches usually last?

If the tranny is coming out, this would be a great time to change the timing chain.

It depends on the driver as much as the quality of materials. I bought a used Isuzu Rodeo that had 60,000 miles and had to replace the clutch when I got it. I sold it at 250,000 with the same clutch in it. The next guy blew it out in less than 20,000 miles.

I also had a Mazda B2000 with 385,000 on the original clutch when I sold it.

I thought about the slave cylinder after I posted but really didn't want to tell you that the 6 spd was inside the bell housing. Smart money is to replace the clutch and the timing chains and tensioners. Taking that trans out is a PITA. I think I paid $300 for a Sachs clutch and flywheel. Went with a stock weight flywheel (17#?) should have gone with a lighter weight. The chain kit was about $175. and takes about 2 hours to install. Best to do that at a dealer who will have the tool to lock the cams.
