Grip Thickness

So, I tend to have an issue with hand cramps on both hands while riding...not from the clutch or throttle hand positioning, nor gloves (already checked all that)

I rode my buddy's scooter with fat grips for a while and really, really preferred them.

Logic tells me there must be some downfall to having larger grips on my dual sport, but I can't for the life of me think of what it is?

If there's not, I hope I can find some that don't have friggin chrome on them.

There's nothing wrong with fat grips as long as you have large hands. I tried the Pro Grip 714's but, they're a little too thick for my hands so I settled on the Pro Grip 737's, which are about 1.5 mm thinner.

I dont have exceptionally largr hands, just long fingers. It especially sucks when wearing electric glove liners.

I have slighter longer than average fingers, and like my fat grips. So yeah, theres definitely something to it.

Long fingers here too. I like grips that are thick in the middle and a grippy texture.

My favorite grips work on multis, but they're firm enough that I've not tried them on my thumper. They're also discontinued by the manufacturer. https://www.denniskirk.com/611045.sku

There may be a replacement with an "interior air chamber":

The discontinued Sunline grips had not only the large diameter, but a fairly grippy surface texture too. I'm not sure the others have that grippy surface. (And Z1 enterprises is a small shop that I've had good experience with.)

Wrap some fabric tape around the bars and then stretch the grips over. This will help expand the grip area, you can see if you like it without buying new grips. Of course possible you're just holding too tight.

Another endorsement for the Pro Grip 714. I've got them on both my DRZ and 'Strom. And had them on both my KLRs. Best $10 accessory, though a Crampbuster is pretty good add on.

I have been using Oury Road Grips on all my dirt bikes for years. Larger diameter, longer, and stickier than others I have tried. http://www.oemcycle.com/Item/product/900023351

Oury Road are my favorite. I swap to 714's in cool weather so the heat from the grip warmers can come thru a little quicker.
