Cheap plastic rally fairing hack?...
OK, so bare with me. I am a tinkerer. I like to think, a lot. Some of the thoughts I have are gold. Some, well... are not.
I have had a KLR. I made it look like what I wanted. A rally bike. ![]() ![]() It just wasn't. So I got a DRZ. And made it look like I wanted. ![]() I would have gotten rid of the KLR at that time but I was upside down on it and in bad financial states, so I kept it. Always though thinking of the bike I wanted... I recently got rid of my KLR and bought my GF a F800r. Now I have a street bike to ride when she isn't and now I can mess with the DRZ I had given her so long ago. I have been looking all over for inspiration. All of the threads. All of them. Over and over. I found one that referenced these guys... http://www.facebook.com/pages/Rally-...44806925574036 and I had an epiphany, lets see if anyone else can guess what this is. I know it is not perfect and there may be better out there, but I think it is a damn good start for a cheap plastic adv fairing... ![]() ![]() ![]() I have wanted to get a 3d printer for quite some time and am thinking of making parts of the tower out of 3d printed ABS. I know this is no where near finished but I am getting a feel from the masses if I am crazy or not. What do you guys think!? ![]() |

Its a rear fender...
what do I win? Pezz_GS did something like it... ![]() I have heard of helmet visors being used as screens, but that doesn't quite have the rallye look...

If there is one thing that I have learned with my time on the internet is that there are no original ideas anymore. Haha.
You win the fact that you won I will keep you guys posted if anything comes of this. Thanks for the heads up on our fellow inmate who dun it before me. |

He had problems because he used a fender from a KTM and so it made the bike unreliable.

I am chugging along. Not sure if I will keep the fender idea.
I am trying to think of what I will make the fairing material out of and I keep coming back to fiberglass. I really want to do something like a vacu-formed plastic but I am not sure what kind/thickness will work. The pinnacle I am still thinking will be 3d printed. That way it can be shared via the thing-a-verse. Right now I am toying with the idea of leaving the mount as is and making the lower attachment points adjustable, giving people a lot of options of adjustment. The stem mounting will probably change to allow for adjustment as well. |

I tinker also. I got $85 stuck in this. It's not really a fairing perhaps a fiberglass windscreen?

Ya'll should call the boys at Highway Dirt Bikes, I don't know what they're asking for theirs, but their product stoutness is not in question.

I have their: top clamp, handguards, mirrors and vibe inserts. They are worth every penny. I will keep trucking along with my project but for someone who wants a bulletproof design, made in america and great support, go with HDB...

Very nice!
I wish I had that kind of production ability. I have come up with a new idea. Since we all seem to be cheap skates, how about making available a blueprint style sheet that you guys can just have printed out and use to cut anything rigid into the basic shape. Then from there glass it or whatever you want? I will still be making the rigid frame out of 3d printed parts for now. |
