FD Failure in Ushuaia; need truck to Puerto Natales

Howdy folks--

Literally, on my way to the sign at the end of the road past Ushuaia, my final drive failed (2002 1150 GSA). I am currently in Ushuaia and I need a truck to take me to Puerto Natales tomorrow or the next day. Does anyone have any leads on how I might do this?

This final drive big bearing has less than 20,000 miles on it. INCREDIBLY FRUSTRATING and I am very bummed out that I am going to have to truck my bike out of here.

It's a pack spare main and crown bearing rule w/these bikes, unfortunately.

So I road the bike from Ushuaia and I made it nearly 650 km before I think the gears started shearing in Villa Tehuelche 145 km before Puerto Natales. I think I can find a truck to get me to Puerto Natales by the 8p ferry loading tonight, where the ferry will take me to Puerto Montt.

Does anyone have any ideas on where I can rent a truck in Puerto Montt that I can drive to Santiago with the bike, where I will then drop it off at the shipper's and fly home? Or, is anyone driving from Puerto Montt to Santiago around the 22nd or 23rd?

What a horrible way to end a trip.

Thanks for any help or insight you can offer me. I REALLY appreciate it!

You could probably order a used final drive from the US for around $200. Shipping would be about $200. Duties maybe another $100. I bet that would still be a lot cheaper than renting a truck and a lot easier and more enjoyable.

Problem with this is that it generally takes 10 days min to get anything air freighted in and through customs.

I blew the final drive on my 99 1100 GS about three years ago when I was riding in the upper Cajon de Maipo about 50 km from Santiago.

Made it back to the city spewing oil and making a lot of noise.

I have a good mechanic in Santiago but still it was 2 months before he had it back in my hands working. BMW doesnt stock much here so nearly everything has to be ordered. Generally they wont ship until they get a certain amount of stuff on backorder which can take up to a month if you hit the cycle at the worst possible time. Probably if I had gone to the authorized BMW dealer they would have done it in 3 to 4 weeks but at more than double the cost.

So if you ship something in and are missing some other little item you are looking at another long wait.

And thats without even getting in to the fact that of the last 5 things I have had shipped in to Chile two of them got sidetracked and delayed two to three weeks and one got lost and was never seen or heard from again. Not good odds.
