Thumb Advice

If you had to choose between 2008 990 adventure with basically no miles vs a 2007 with 20000 on the meter.
Both are well farkled
Price difference is about a grand.
BUT and this is a biggie
I sit in Sweden and the bikes are in SoCal and a fellow here on ADV is going to have a look see.
I'm going to use the bike in cali for a wek or two and then I'm off to Mexico and beyond and I aim to go to Argentina on it.
Spontaneous reactions please.

The grand is not that important and yet again waste not want not
If they're EU models (so the 2008 has the new dash, while the 2007 has the old), then I'd go with the 2008, as it has many improvements (for ex. better throttle control) over the "old style dash" model.

If they aren't EU bikes, so they both have the old dash, it doesn't really matter which one you pick.. pick the one that you like better - if this is the case.

08 model was last of the old dash in EU.

And I am keeping mine because it does not have an immobiliser ;)

Who needs black calipers and swingarm anyhow......



Regards the original question, I would go for the near new one, but do a coolant flush and fit a sidestand bracket before your trip.

Immobiliser

Stay away from models with immobilisers on! Mine went south and I have heard of this happening to others. It is not easy to get rid of it believe me.

It's not just the black swingarm and brake calipers that are ugraded on the new style dash model:) The bigest update is that it has the SD's engine, and the new (not so snatchy) ECU
And yes, you're right that the 2009 is the first new style dash model year

2 minutes with TuneECU cures the throttle issues, I have done loads of em.

I had 3 9x0. One carb 2004, two EFI. The latest is a 2008 model.

My firm idea is, get a later model. However after 200672007 this bikes have been much improved. So the less milage the better. I would go for the 2007 model.

The bloke who had the 2008 sold it so now I'm back to square one, SOD IT!!!!!!
Anybody who wants to sell? rather in SoCal than anywhere else.
What would a carbed 2005 be like there's one around for less than 3 grand?
It's on an ad that I found when I got the sorry news that the 2008 was sold.
Are there jet kits that one can change for high altitude, up in the Andes and if are they difficult to change?
The high plane in the Andes is around 4000 m ie 13-14000 feet and I don't want to be stuck behind truck with 25 hp

I have a 2005.5 950, and while I like the way it feeds the fuel to the engine, If I were buying a bike now, I'd go for a 990S or R.. But I'm an IT guy, so I like to play with digital things, and it's way more easy on the computer, than pulling everything from the bike all the time..

Getting to the jets is a PITA IMO, as you (ofcourse) have to take off the carbs for this procedure, for what you have to strip down the bike.. You can buy and use flexjets for the IDLE circuit though..
