Wheelies?

This may be a silly question.. But how does one go about clutching up a wheeling on a f800? The bikes I've had in the past I could pop the front end up off of torque. I don't know if being 250lbs is my problem but I've had a hell of a time getting my f800gs to bring the front end up. I'm not familiar with technique on clutching so I thought I'd put it up here to kick around.

Heaps of throttle, dump the clutch. Sorted. Well, sort of.

Start with not quite heaps of throttle and not quite dumping the clutch but releasing it quick. Start small and build up. Always cover the rear brake.

On my T800XC I get to about 6000-7000rpm in first, chop the gas and dab the front brake while pulling the clutch in, and as the forks spring back up from the brake dab grab a handful of throttle and relase the clutch pretty much simultaneously and the front comes up quite quickly.

Be ready to shut the throttle and dab the rear brake if it comes up too fast.

It's all in revs and clutch. 99.99% of all streetbikes can do a nice wheelie! Buy a cheap, 200cc, four-stroke dirtbike and become very profiecient at riding l-o-n-g balance point wheelies (on grass) before even attempting your first power wheelie on your $10,000/470 pound GS.

This. It has the power to come up very quickly, if you pass the balance point it WILL be expensive. Clutch is not needed, just run up to about 5 or 6 K in first, chop the throttle, let the front settle and gas it. You will be up in the air right away.

So you are saying the F800 forks compress when you chop the throttle?.... Hmmm I haven't noticed that

Just don't do what I did in This Video. I decided not to try any crazy wheelies on my 800 until I have a cheaper bike to practice the balance point/rear brake stuff.

X2 on chopping the throttle in first. Once you get good at it you can shift into 2nd and 3rd. I haven't made it out of 3rd yet and probably don't want to. You could drop down to a 15 tooth front sprocket and it will make things easier but you will lose your top speed (sucks on freeway)

Hmm, it's been a while since I've ridden an 800 but from what I remember the standard gas it, let off, and crack the throttle popped the front wheel right up. It's all in the timing, no clutch should be needed. Dumping the clutch is how you can get in trouble, like the video showed.

Get it into 2nd gear and 1/2 pull in the clutch, give it some gas and release the clutch.........easy!

I'd agree about the open-close-open the throttle technique. My F800GS will only wheelie like this in first, but it's easy and much less likely to go horribly wrong. Don't forget to cover the rear brake! That habit kept my 950A from going over backward a couple times. Same for my old Ducati, and my VFR, and my XR400, and ...

I have yet to learn to get a bike to the balance point, and I've also never managed to shift gears while doing a wheelie. I'm hoping eventually get that, but vowed to not practice new tricks on the big bike. I've thought about going to one of those 1 day wheelie schools, but never seem to get around to it.
