BreckTrek History

When I moved here (Woodland Park) in 2007 the old timers told me you could ride from here to Breckenridge without a plate. That's what began this whole thing. It took two seasons to put the route together. Most of my exploration time was spent trying to find a ford across the South Platte River.

There is no longer a legal water crossing, primarily due to trail closures following the Hayman fire. This means we must cross the South Platte River at Lake George. This also means we are forced onto asphalt and therefore a license plate is required.

2009

2009 was the first year of the ride. We started in Monument, rode to Breck, camped for the night, and rode back the next day. The ride home was supposed to be easy, but everyone wanted more technical trails so we ended up modifying the route for more of a challenge. We had ten total riders, with a main group of 5 (Ryan, Colin, Randy, Jeff, and myself)

2010

In 2010 we tried it as a one-day ride, this made the ride a serious distance challenge. It was very popular. We started with 16 riders at the beginning of the day. At the top of Georgia Pass we had 20 riders. And I think we had 9 remaining at the end of the day. We pulled off the trail not-too-long after dark.

BreckTrek 2011

2011 was supposed to be almost the same as 2010, but with some harder sections like 735, technical singletrack.

Unfortunately we had a couple late winter storms and we couldn't get over either Georgia or Boreas Pass into Breckenridge, so our trip ended in Jefferson.

This was the only ride that had singletrack and it was the only time we did not make it all the way to Breckenridge.

16 riders started, 8 finished.

BreckTrek 2012

I was late putting this year’s ride together so I thought I would have a smaller group because of it, but at the starting line we had 25 attendees (a new record). The route changes slightly from year to year and this year’s route was the hardest, but it was a route I've been trying to do for years. I really liked the route, but the attrition rate was a little high, so we’ll modify the route accordingly this year.

25 riders started, 8 finished.

Every year I say we will be out after dark and every year there are people asking me on the day of the ride if we'll be home before dark.

So the answer is NO! We will NOT be home before dark! You will NEED a working headlight. You will NEED lots of stamina. You do not need night riding experience, but you need to be ready to get some. The sun usually goes down around 8:30 and we usually get home around 10:00.

What about riding it at night in a blinding cloud of dust with a group of guys that have no idea where they're going and randomly ride into bushes?

No experience of any kind is required for this ride. The whole premise of the ride is to test yourself in a different kind of riding experience.
