hi gobear and welcome. i'm running the clarke 4.7 on my L. no problems. i fabricated some struts out of aluminium for better stabilization instead of the wire cross-piece thingy that came with the clarke. the range is pretty substantial now.
good luck al

I have the IMS. Fits OK with some minor rubbing with the cylinder head bolts. Probably has 5000 off-road miles on it now.
Having said that, I have always been impressed with the Acrebis tanks I have seen and owned. Bruce |

Running an IMS 4 gal tank. No leaks or problems other than discoloration from the fuel over the years. It was white but is kinda tan now. it has been on the bike for over 10 years. I did have to replace the gas cap because the rubber gasket/vent ripped this year and I could not find just the gasket. I think that $12 in over a decade is pretty good.

IMS
Removed the stocker, and just bolted up the IMS 4 gallon.Used OEM petcock, and frame foam.I would like to put on thicker brakets then the ones that came with the tank, but haven't had any problem with the IMS brackets after,3,000 miles.

duct work
Honda had an issue with heat and put the wings on the stock tank.
I went with the Acerbis for that reason. Hey they built their tank with the wings as more fuel space. There are some that can't figure out how to mount the tank with the limited instructions that come from Acerbis, but don't let that stop you from considering them for your tank replacement. Don't listen to the pin heads that couldn't figure out how to mount it and cut the tabs off the frame to make it work. The tank will fit and will come on and off quite smoothly once you get it on. The tank is really made well and the mounting hardware holds the tank in place. |

Cut the tabs off the frame? You are kidding, right? What peanut would do such a thing? The Acerbis is the easieast thing to fit, dead simple so even a moron (me) can do it.
God help them if they do their own servicing.

I've read that the Acerbis is a tighter fit on the XR-L because of the additional stuff mounted to the frame under there.
It is a super fit on the XR600R and plenty haven't had any fitment issue on the XR-L. I've had Clarke, IMS, and Acerbis - I rank Acerbis tops, and Clarke a close second. IMS only took third because of what I considered a cheesy petcock setup (on a DR650 tank)

They do provide a petcock, but it's single-stem and leaves lots of room for the gasket to pinch, squish, and leak.

Acerbis tanks come with their own dual petcocks. I've got the one that is almost 6 gallons. It was easy to install, but you have to relocate or raise your stock turn signals. It has held up well.
![]() I fairly anal about bike maintenance and keeping things tight. A month or two after I posted this my Acerbis began to leak near the backbone, so I switched to a Clarke. It holds a gallon less, but it feels better between the knees. lewismedlock screwed with this post 06-24-2009 at 04:02 PM |

Tab Removal
Yes if you check on thumper talk, there is advice to cut the tabs off the frame. I didn't and havn't had any problems. Yes you do have to relocate stock turn sigs on the front end. I went with the Acrbis hand guards with the turn sigs built into them.
Lewismedlock, Is that the taxi driver bead seat your running there? How well do rate them for long distance riding? With the bigger tank, I don't have to stop riding for about 200 miles before refuel and my ass would like something between it and the seat. |
