2013 F800GS Forks Weeping

I just bought a new 2013 F800GS.

I drove it from Central Fl to Texas and along the way I noticed the forks were always a bit oily. I called the dealer and he said it was normal and the fork seals needed to seal.

I am not sure I am buying that. I wiped them down when I got home and by the next morning they had weeped oil again.

I am wondering if anyone else has seen this and if it truly is normal.

No Not normal. Bad dealer.

Well, yes and no. A bit of oil is left behind during operation to keep things lubed but you shouldn't need to wipe them down. If they were built sloppy then there may be some residual oil seeping out. It may clear itself up. The Dealer doesn't want to jump right on it unless it gets excessive. You've got three years warranty so lots of time to sort it out.

Dripping on the floor is excessive tho. See what happens by the first service and get it fixed then as long as it can wait that long.

Guess we'll see how the new WP forks fare.

The reason I noticed it was the oil on my leathers.

It is not dripping on the floor, it is really just a super thin film that is coating the entire fork. It does ever so slightly pool at the bottom flange.

This is my 1st experience with these inverted forks. Other than that Bike did awesome.

I just want to get all the bugs shook out before our next big journey.

Seals did not get proper lubrication from the factory, I've seen this on a few so far. The weeping will just continue to get worse. They need to be replaced, check the lowers for any nicks in the chrome lowers that might have gotten past quality control from the factory.

My left fork started leaking and dripping on the floor after about 100 miles. My dealer replaced the seal under warranty and no problems so far after 1000 miles.

Happened to me.

I picked up my 2013 F800GS on 9/1/2012 and when I brought it back for the 1st service (3-4 weeks later) they noticed the seal weeping.

They pulled it, but didn't have a replacement seal/tool in the CONUS, so cleaned things up and put her back together. They told me to keep a close eye on things and if it started to leak again, come back ASAP.

6000+ miles and things are still fine.

It's a warranty claim for sure. Tell the dealer to bash his bullshit where the sun don't shine.

Based on the kms I've done and the number of rebuilds I've done on 3 different bikes that see at least 50% dirt, I'd say I'm averaging about 33,000km per set of seals.

Once they start leaking they only get worse, usually within a couple of thousand kms they're pissing oil everywhere.

Check for scratches on fork tubes. I had a tiny nick from a rock on the inside the left hand leg on my RMZ forks on one of my DRs and it chewed the seal out in no time. Other than that possibility, it's back to the dealer.

I have a set of RMZ Showas on my F8 at the moment and they have a good 5000+kms on them of pure off road, and they don't leave any discernable ring of oil on the legs at all. I've wiped them with tissue paper and checked and there's nothing but dust.

I noticed leaking and dripping in mine at approximately 300 miles (no off road riding at all). The service guy at my dealership claims this is "unusual". There seems to be a significant number of people with the same problem on brand new bikes. Maybe not so "unusual".

There was oil from the forks on the front discs when I took it for service. Not good. Check yours!
