Canyon Lands/Shafer Trail "Day Trippin"

Summer before last my wife and I were full time RVrs. We spent 6 months near Moab and had many opportunities to ride the hundreds of miles of off-road trails in the area. I rode a DRZ 400 and she had a Super Sherpa. One day, we decided to do the trail that starts in Canyon Lands nat. park and ends by negotiating the Shafer Switchbacks which takes up up nearly 3000 ft in elevation in about 3/4 of a mile. The entire ride is about 35 miles of off-road terrain with a wide variety of challenges. Here are some photos of our day.

In this photo, behind us you can get an idea of the distance and type of terrain we covered.

If you look closely, you can see part of the "White Rim Trail" we weren't on this trail, rather down in the bottom of the huge canyon to the left in the photo.

Part of our ride took us along the Colorado River, which was faaaar below. This is Melanie standing at "Martha and Louise" point, which if you saw the movie, is where they drove their car off the cliff. (That scene supposedly took place at the Grand Canyon, but actually was filmed in this spot.

The next few shots are of the actual Shafer Switchbacks some taken as we ascended and some from the overlook along the highway where our ride ended. Hope you enjoyed and if you ever get the chance, it's a great ride! Be sure to take water LOL>

By the way, there are no guard rails.

These two photos aren't from that particular ride, but these are the bikes we rode.

The Sherpa did everything the DRZ would do. Granted my wife didn't have the skill/confidence in a few spots and I had to ride her bike, but then this was her first motorcycle.

This is how we got the bikes to the pretty places.

Getting to head to Wyoming after wintering in Phx.

This is Melanie, 390beretta's wife, I rode the same switchback trail on my mountain bike and NO ONE rode my mountain bike on any part of that trial for me. It took 3 hour and 45 minutes to pedal it.

Bitch (just kidding) I'm soooo lucky to have her! And she does things on a MT bike that I can't imagine. (although she does have a few scars). I think her Mt. bike riding made her a much better off-road rider on the motorcycle. She's a keeper for sure!

A friend of mine pointed out that in the first picture of the switchbacks, there's is a full size road grader in the upper right quandrant of the photo.....I hadn't noticed it, but it really gives some perspective.
