Tuareg Rally - Day 3 (Monday March 11th 2013) summary - #76 Mark Brincat

With the third day/stage timing cancelled, riders were able to either ride the rally route as originally planned in their own time, or take the assistance (road) route directly to the third bivouac hotel. Mark elected to ride the stage to gain further experience on the bike KTM 690 Rallye.

“It was a tough stage, around 200kms in length - a lot of soft sandy piste [tracks], with quite difficult navigation in some parts, but all in all it was an enjoyable day” he begins “It suited me [and my bike] far more as the terrain was much flatter, and in places you could just wind up the steering damper and really go for it in top gear along much of the route - it reminded me of riding in Australia in that sense.”

The route was split into two sectors (both of which would have been timed) with a short liaison on the road between. “The second half of the day was really nice” he says of the sector billed the ‘off-road playground’ - “Lots of steep climbs and descents - so it was challenging, but a lot of fun!”

With the stage timing cancelled riders could afford to relax a little today, and Mark teamed up with another competitor from the UK - “However we decided to push-on a bit as we didn’t want to get caught up by the cars [that typically start only after all the bikes have departed], as that is where things can get difficult in the dust when overtaking” he explains, having suffered a small fall the day before in similar circumstances.

“I’ve been struggling a bit with the navigation element [since this is my first rally], so we used today really as a bit of a training exercise, and it seemed to work out very well” he smiles.

Stage result: day 2/7: 50th Moto Amateur

Overall position: day 2/7: 19th Moto Amateur

on his arrival at the bivouac hotel in gafsa on the evening of the second day, i asked jean-luc how his rally had progressed since leaving the dunes of douz.

“it really was like night and day” he begins “i was so happy to get on the sort of terrain i knew, and that suits my bike better - the 690 is a big bike [compared to many on the rally], and to be able to stretch it’s legs and just keep moving was a revelation” he exclaims “rather than having to keep picking it up the whole time... It was a huge pleasure!”

he continues: “as the day went on i got more and more confident - i even started to overtake a few slower riders!” he says with a smile. “it was much more what i had expected from a rally... The day was much longer, but at the end i was much less tired.”

jean-luc described how much of the second day’s rally route reminded him of where he has ridden in the usa: “the terrain was similar to that which you can find in southern california, or arizona or baja mexico... “there were many changes of scenery throughout the day - and that is the thing i like about riding. The one thing we don’t have is the chott (dry lake plateau) which was huge fun to race across.”

“i felt confident that my navigation skills also improved throughout the day, and i am now looking forward to the rest of the rally - even though i understand there are more dunes tomorrow”
he sighs.

Despite the 3rd day/stage timing being cancelled, jean-luc still elected to ride the rally route alongside his iysk wine team-mate dirk kessler “we had a very enjoyable day - i’m here to ride, and to gain as much experience as i can” he says “the first day made question what i was doing here, but today it was a relief to realise i was not so out of my element after all.”

No thanks! That would just make me think bad thoughts about liquidating things just so I could go play in the desert with the other loonies. :^)

Hi Motorfiets - Nothing is confirmed as yet, but the Tuareg is traditionally held in the middle or towards the end of March... this year it was slightly earlier.

I'm hoping they get the video from today up on Youtube soon too - the Helicam footage is awesome!

bummer....

Hopefully if it falls around the same weekend/week as this year!! I'm on spring break from school right now... I've already started saving my pennies to race this... hopefully Dave won't mind seeing his old 525 raced again

seems like every single good rally race falls during school time and nothing over summer break

Day 4. Calle and Morgan pushed hard and finished 6 and 7 on the day. Also Per, Magnus, Tony, Stefan and Hans made the full stage, although Hans was penalized for a timecard issue. Mattias E who held a top 15 overall blow his engine and is out. Anette made two laps and a bit before retiring. Results for RRS after day 4. Note, linked to a Swedish site but click on Tuareg 2013 and you will get the results.
