The race is ON!!!

Hot dang diggity huge news just in from the bivouac hotel in Douz...

#1 I was surprised to see #22 Guillaume Martens arrive in the hotel lobby, sporting a braced and bandaged wrist... he explained he'd crashed just 5kms from the start in the camel grass trying to overtake a slower bike (Guillaume started toward the rear of the pack today because of a large time penalty for missing a check yesterday on stage 4) - his wrist is almost certainly broken and although he was able to ride one-handed to the checkpoint, he is now out of the race.

#2 As we were talking - in walked race leader Rob Smits, and in another twist of fate today, it turns out that he too crashed early on today's stage, and while he is only bruised, his bike was too damaged to continue, so he will attract a huge time penalty for missing the rest of the day, and is now out of contention...

This means that Ned Suesse automatically moves up to 2nd overall in the standings, and more importantly, is only 3 minutes behind the previous second postion rider, Rob's father Mark Smits... this could get really interesting, really soon!!!

#3 AND BOY, IT JUST DID! - I can't believe it - Ned Suesse has just walked into the lobby a little before 2pm, having completed the special in fantastic time...

He was first to the finish with a comfortable lead, which means if he has made up those 3 minutes, the provisional standings mean that Neduro is now LEADING THE TUAREG RALLYE!!!

Obviously we must wait to have the stage results confirmed later today - but as long as he picked up no penalties, we can be confident Ned is now in the lead going into the last two stages based in the dunes around Douz.

GO NED!!!

Wow . . .

Of course I am very excited for Ned, but also very hopeful that he will just keep to "riding his ride." This rally has been unexpectedly tough for me to watch . . . I hope all you ADVers can understand . . . I want only the best for my wonderful son! Stay the course, Ned. lots of love riding with you, right on your handlebars, not to mention from the inside of me to the inside of you.

Knowing Ned, he is just riding his ride, and I'm quite sure that he will continue to do so; he's unflappable.

Steady, solid results each day, and he just works his way up in the standings.

Notice at around the 5:28 mark of the video linked to a few posts up how Ned is the only one in his starting group that doesn't loft the front wheel across the line. That tells me he's got the right mindset.

Thanks, team ADV . . .

. . . for reassuring an occasionally squeamish mama. Hey, what can I say? I haven't had time to check the videos (working today) but will do so. Also got a call from The Man himself, although I was out when it came. Life is good . . .

Oh boy... what was the stage like today? Fast and rocky or sandy tracks?

Ned leaving the start line @ 5:28 in the video

Really digging the remote control helicam footage, a great low-cost alternative to the helicopters used at Dakar. Much more agile over a short distance, he's getting some pretty cool shots! It would be neat to have some footage using one of these from the big dune finish at Iquique.

Broom truck with the flatbed tow rig @ 4:55 into the video is cool!

Thanks for the reports, Jenny. Having this kind of coverage is great
